3+ years of experience in a Software Engineering, DevOps, or Systems Engineering capacity.
2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.
Programming experience with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, Shell, Ruby etc.
Proficient at designing software systems – from high-availability large-scale distributed systems to bespoke scripted solutions.
2+ years of experience with monitoring, troubleshooting and resolving system and software components.

We now support customized shopping experiences for eBook customers on eight generations of Kindle e-ink and Fire devices, as well as third party tablets, smartphones, and computers; and we deliver this experience in over a dozen countries.
Systems Development Engineers at Amazon is a unique role which organically emerged as the company evolved. Inspiration for the Systems Development Engineer came from Systems Engineers who “built” unique technology to solve business and customer problems. Systems Development Engineers perform traditional Systems Engineering and writes or develops scripts, applications, or mechanisms to manage infrastructure. This role was created for the “builder” population of Systems Engineers who go beyond using basic tools and GUIs to implement infrastructure as code and even server-less systems.
The ideal candidate should be detail oriented, have strong organizational skills, able to juggle multiple tasks at once, able to work independently and can maintain professionalism under pressure. You must be able to identify problems before they happen and implement solutions that detect and prevent outages. You must be able to accurately prioritize projects, make sound judgments and work to improve the customer experience.
Key job responsibilities
As a Systems Development Engineer, you will:
Manage ambiguity: Independently take steps necessary to understand complex technologies and customer use cases across a variety of customer personas and product categories to produce meaningful insights that drive improved customer experience.
Invent and simplify methodologies: Plan, design, and develop a portfolio of methodologies, tools, and systems for data collection and data analysis. Continuously innovate and improve processes to optimize efficiencies.
Implementing software components to fix/mitigate single point of failures, bottlenecks, and unreliable dependencies.
Analyzing the architecture of a service to propose and make changes for fully automating the infrastructure management and continuous deployments
Provide day‐to‐day operations support to Books Shopping Experience teams.
Identify and remove scaling bottlenecks in large-scale distributed systems.
Contribute materially to team’s roadmap, and constantly help to determine what’s most important. Together, you and your leadership team will decide on the projects that best support your team’s mission.
Maintain effective communication and collaboration with partner teams, both local and remote, in completing interdependent work items
Knowledge of professional system engineering practices & best practices for the full application life cycle, including system standards, system audit & reviews, configuration management, build processes, testing, and operations.
Has successfully led a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project.
Proficiency with multiple programming/scripting languages: Java, Python, Perl, Ruby, Bash.
Experience with DevOps environments and maintaining critical services.
Strong distributed systems and web services design and implementation experience.
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.
