American Express is looking for a hands-on Senior Engineer I in the Enterprise Data Technology and Augmented Intelligence organization for leading the development of Machine Learning Platform.
American Express Enterprise Machine Learning Platform provides Application Engineers, Data Scientists and Data Analysts a large scale comprehensive platform to pre-process large scale data from enterprise data lakes, train/build machine learning models, and leverage the platform to predict/score using these models. It provides its users a high performance compute environment on HDFS and GPU’s to process large work load of data. In addition to the open source ML Libraries, it has custom developed ML algorithms which are developed to be used enterprise wide to develop ML models. It has a custom developed interface on Jupyter Notebook for its users to develop and deploy ML models.
As a Senior Engineer on the Machine Learning Platform Engineering team you will:
- Work on large data, implement upcoming and new algorithms using big data and distributed technology
- Apply your engineering skills to innovate, design and implement solutions for Machine Learning domain.
- Design and implement cutting edge solutions and host them in a secured and governed way.
- Work on enabling the ML Platform to be cloud native by re engineering the components to conform to Cloud Native Foundation (CNF)
- Develop solution to run large scale ML Ops pipeline for feature engineering/model training and model monitoring.
- Perform technical aspects of software development for assigned applications including design, developing prototypes, and coding assignments
- Lead code reviews and automated testing • Debug software components and identify code defects for remediation
- Leads the deployment, support, and monitoring of software across test, integration, and production environments.
- Have a focus on delivery following an Agile process.
- Be passionate about quality metrics in product implementation.
- Take accountability for the success of the team
- Influence team members by challenging status quo, demonstrating risk taking, and implementing creative ideas
- Accountable for accurate completion and quality of all documentation and work produced by engineering team

Minimum Qualifications:
- 9+ years and a wide breath of software development experience in a professional environment.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience with Java or similar Object Oriented Programming Language in a professional environment required.
- 3+ years required with at least one other modern programming language such as Node.js/JavaScript, Scala, Python, or GO.
- Hands-on expertise with application design, software development, and automated testing required.
- Hands-on experience in development of highly scalable, high performance backend applications using a variety of technologies, with specific expertise in Enterprise Java (including advanced design pattern & common libraries) and cloud native technologies required.
- Experience in building enterprise-grade APIs using state-of-the-art techniques and best practices (GraphQL,REST, JSON, XML, etc.) required.
- Experience with relational databases, including designing complex schemas and queries required.
- Experience developing within distributed systems or a microservice based architecture required.
- Experience with Cloud Native system design required.
- Familiarity with Containers and Container Orchestration tools such as Docker , Docker Swarm , Kubernetes required.
- Familiarity with Data Centric application design, Event Driven Systems, Kafka, Data pipelines, Stream processing systems etc. is required
- Experience working with big data technologies such as Spark, Hive, Hadoop at significant scale in a production environment.
- Experience working with Public Clouds (AWS,GCP,Azure).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting workflows, tools, or complex areas of a codebase.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and multi-task efficiently.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Validated experience leading teams of engineers
- Experience using database systems like Couchbase, Cassandra, Redis etc. in a high performance and resilient configurations is a plus.
- Strong experience with Jenkins, Jira and Git tools.
- Good oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal and multi-tasking skills.
- Strong analytical skills and programming skills, in production environment.
- Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
- Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer science engineering, or related experience required; advanced degree preferred
Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
