The role

Aspen’s vision is to be the global reference point for quality in all its markets. Regarding data, Aspen has a common principle to ensure that its data is accurate and fit for purpose to support business decision-making, promote trust in reporting and provide client intimacy. The role of the Head of Data Science and Engineering is to establish a strong data engineering and data science capability in support of the business needs to become a data led company.

The Head of Data Science and Engineering will develop our data engineering capability within Aspen, finding innovative and efficient ways to source data, create an automated pipeline of data to our single version of truth and utilie ML/AI capabilities to derive insights that can automate decisions for the business. You will achieve this through your recruitment of full stack data engineers who will partner with the functions to integrate data and curate insights at pace with high threshold of data quality. Through your data science and engineering capability, you will introduce standards and principles for the way we convert our insurance knowledge into code providing consistent, framework approach to the delivery of our solutions end to end.

Key accountabilities

Strategy and Planning
 Set and regularly update the enterprise data strategy and organisational model in close association with the Group Data

& Anaytics Leadership team

Define the agile framework and processes enabling every function to turn requirements and idea’s into insights that

support data based decisions  Data maturity score for our data management capability across each function is improving year on year
 Delivery of profitable growth of business linked to availability of data within the single version of truth
 Adopt DevOps, DataOps and MLOps frameworks and best practises as the standard for all data engineering across the

company
 Development and monitoring of data science and engineering quality metrics and responsibility for directing the appropriate remediation of breaches to these standards
 Develop and maintain controls on data quality, interoperability, and sources to effectively manage corporate risk associated with the use of data for decision making
 Organize and chair the data science and engineering chapter that meets regularly with a focus on priorities and capabilities

across the value chain to improve processing of data and enhance our ability to make use of ML/AI in decision making

of our processes
 Co-ordinate alignment across the business’s and utilising our single version of data truth which will power all analytics

To develop and maintain strong operational and strategic relationships with key internal customers within the business

Policy, Process and Procedures

Provide data sourcing capabilities across Aspen to ensure any data available to Aspen can be accessed and integrated in an efficient manner

Overseeing and coordinating the data engineering team who support the business with delivery of data to meet the

analytics needs into our single version of truth and provide skills in building analytical front end solutions using reporting

tools such as power BI, Tableau or Web UIs

Ensure all data produced by our clients or internally within Aspen is made available in our single version of truth.

Build a data science and engineering capability, raising the skills required to source, curate data in support of our

ambition to become data led.
 Institute a programmatic approach for implementing ML/AI capabilities to identify, prioritize and execute ML/AI

initiatives with clear line of sight to business strategy goals and business outcomes
 Consistently applied processes and procedures around the delivery of data across the insurance value chain
 Effective project plans and delivery.
 Progress closely monitored and reviewed.
 Design and implementation of effective controls.
 Clear articulation and adherence to technical, security and service standards.
 Satisfactory Internal Audit result regarding processes.
 Regular and effective two-way communication with key stakeholders
 Feedback from, and level of communication with other business functions
 Compliance with best practice, regulatory/legal requirements and Aspen processes and policies
 Service delivery in line with SLAs
 No loss of integrity to data
 Effective budget management
 Define, manage, and advance Data Science and Engineering

principles, policies and programs for data management in

concert with legal, information security, and corporate risk and compliance offices
 Evolve and institutionalize behaviours for the appropriate use of data within changing security requirements, privacy needs, ethical values, societal expectations, and cultural norms

Skills & experience

A proven conceptual and strategic thinker who is capable of distilling, packaging, and presenting complex information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner
 Significant experience in accessing, integrating, sharing data across the business introducing responsibilities for enhancing our data maturity in each function.
 Experience in using reporting technologies to derive insights from data to support business requirements
 Exposure to all functional disciplines with the ability to use the knowledge from these functions effectively in

identifying data and analytics needs.
 Thorough understanding of data integration, mining, science and analytics technology systems including

but not limited to: RDBMS, reporting tools, Microsoft Azure Synapse, Data bricks, Jupyter notebooks
 Extensive knowledge in data storytelling, being able to quickly derive insights from data

Understanding of data science and engineering discipline, processes, concepts and best practices.
 Sound knowledge of problem analysis, structure analysis, and design techniques.
 Strong understanding of insurance as a business and what insights are needed to effectively steer across the value

chain
 An entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing new, innovative ideas that will stretch the organization and push the boundaries.
 Bring immense curiosity; challenging the status quo and stirring innovative approaches to existing processes and operations
 Leadership skills.

 Experience in technology systems including but not limited to: SQLServer RDBMS, reporting

Specific professional qualifications (and broad business qualifications) at the level of degree or equivalent.
 Qualified within own personal discipline, with extensive post-qualification work experience to include:
o Working with large third-party vendors/ external suppliers.
o Managing relationships with internal business customers at a senior level.

o Strong track record of technology delivery.

o Managing cross functional teams and matrix management.

o Interpreting business strategy and translating this into IT strategy.
o Project management/co-ordination, including managing multiple projects and complex projects to quality, time

and budget.
 In addition:
o Significant experience in the insurance/financial services industry.
