About the role
The ideal candidate will have proven knowledge or experience in contributing to and supporting to the development and application of AI, operation research and mathematical modelling to scheduling systems, supply-chain planning, manufacturing planning & management or similar.
The position will involve taking these skills and applying them to some of the most exciting AI and optimisation problems in the pharmaceutical industry. You will work within a global team of deeply technical engineers, data scientists, scientists & software developers. You will have the chance to contribute to the design, development, and support of tools that will transform how AstraZeneca operates at scale, ultimately making us more efficient in our goal to improve the lives of millions of patients across the globe.
Our team empowers scientists, engineers, and data scientist all the way from early research to manufacturing to be successful with some of our hardest engineering challenges. You will act as technical expert in developing and supporting innovative optimisation and AI solutions.
You will work closely with engineers & product teams and will contribute to the delivery and support of solutions at scale within the AstraZeneca tech stack, whilst encouraging best practices for operation research across the company.
We are looking for optimisation engineers capable of building and supporting robust, accurate OR-based systems and scientifically rigorous solutions that will be used across units in AstraZeneca. As a strong engineer and developer of complex systems, you will be contributing to inventing how we use mathematical modelling and optimisation to enable the productivity of AstraZeneca.
Key Accountabilities

Contribute to development, implementation, and support of OR and optimisation applications.

Work together with senior optimisation engineers in the team, focussed on product delivery and support.

Contribute to various solutions and applications that may cover a broad range of business areas, sometimes at once.

Keep up to date with latest developments in operation research and modelling techniques.

Be self-driven, curious, innovative, deeply technical and learn continuously.

Collaborate with fellow engineers to understand and translate business problems into optimisation engineering problems.

Support development, deployment, and servicing of optimisation solutions.

Liaise with other teams to enhance our technological stack, to enable the adoption of the latest advances in operation research, software engineering and data science.
Essential for the role
-
Masters or equal degree, in Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related subject.

2+ years of experience and demonstrable technical skills in one or more of the following areas: constrained optimization, OR tools, machine learning, software engineering.

Proven knowledge or 2+ years of industry experience with solvers and tools such as Gurobi, localsolver, cplex, and Google OR tools.

2+ year of experience in developing and supporting software, analytical, or AI applications.

Experienced and hands-on programmer, ideally with a background in Python.

Proven knowledge of or experience in software development topics like CI/CD, testing, branching strategies.

Creative, collaborative, & product focused.
Desirable for the role

Experience in predictive modelling and data science.

Experience building end-user facing optimisation applications with complex feature requirements.
