Data Engineer, Bioprocessing – Columbia, MD (On-Site)
What You’ll Do:
Create databases and use ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools to collect, clean, store, and mine bioscience and process data. The successful candidate would join the Biotechnology & Analysis Team in Columbia, MD, where they will be responsible for creating and implementing best practices for data capture, storage, and retrieval to enable the use of quantitative and data analytics/statistical tools to assist with the development, operations and improvement of innovative Bioscience products and processes for the Health and Nutrition sector. This person will be directly involved in linking Information Technology to R&D and to deliver insights to teams within the Biotechnology group.

Key Responsibilities:
Use advanced data mining and monitoring tools to collect, pre-process, clean and curate large data sets. Help to establish a future proof data management infrastructure and work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) on data integrity and preparation in their areas of expertise. Through the creation and maintenance of data sets and visualization tools, insights into methods for maximizing performance, quality and consistency will be determined and fed back to teams at our R&D and Operations/Manufacturing facilities in the Americas. The ideal candidate will partner with biotech and analysis scientists to organize and mine data to enable rapid product development and process optimization.

You Bring:
  • Mininum Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, (Bio)Chemical Engineering or Biostatistics, or related field
  • Proficiency with scripting and workflow languages (e.g. Python or R) to manipulate datasets; additional experience with any ETL tool a plus.
  • Several years experience in data extraction, engineering, and management
  • Experience with cloud-based data storage and retrieval (AWS, Azure)
  • Experience with (relational) databases and SQL
  • Experience linking R&D with digitalization efforts to deliver insightful observations which result in improvements within a Biotechnology, Fermentation or Bioprocess context
  • Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics for the analysis of large data sets, necessary to develop R&D hypotheses
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting or basic understanding of bioprocess engineering in relation to control programming a plus
  • Experience in FAIR Data Management and Knowledge Management is considered a plus
  • Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams across sites to design and execute fermentation optimization and/or strain characterization experiments
  • Motivated self-starter with good organizational skills and the ability to multitask
  • Experience with ‘omics data is considered a plus
  • An excellent oral and written communicator
