Job Description

The Data Engineer is a key role working within a highly collaborative agile analytics team who builds and maintains business-critical data infrastructure, pipelines, and models. This individual will be essential in enabling high-value reporting, analytics, and machine learning solutions.

This position is for a role within GEO-IS Customer Portfolio and within a team of developers and analysts who support the Expeditors’ Network Management Center (NMC), a global solutions-based center of excellence. The NMC supports some of our most significant customers in the aviation, automotive, pharmaceutical, and retail industries, overseeing critical logistics shipments, aircraft on ground shipments, and other specialized logistics service offerings.

Successful candidates must understand or be able to translate complex business requirements into scalable and trusted data pipelines and models. At the core, a successful Data Engineer will excel at the following:

  • Expeditors data and system subject matter expert
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data models
  • Identify data quality opportunities and pursue efforts to standardize and enrich data
  • Collaborate with teams and enhance data models to strengthen dependent BI and analytics solutions


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Translate business needs into logic requirements for business data models
  • Design, build, test, and deploy scalable data pipelines (e.g., Kafka) and data models (e.g., operational performance)
  • Support and maintain data infrastructure (e.g., Databicks)
  • Proactively monitor data pipelines and models to meet expected performance and latency
  • Conduct testing and troubleshooting with end users
  • Perform data quality and validation testing
  • Maintain proper version control and solution backup
  • Develop and update technical documentation
  • Document data lineage and business logic
  • Create and promote best practices for data pipeline and model development
  • Train end-users and data models business logic
  • Works with stakeholders to tune data models to better support operational solutions
  • Support agile work processes and keep work management systems current


This position can be located in any of the following Expeditors offices:

Mexico

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an IT-related field or three years of related professional experience
  • Work effectively with a cross-functional development team
  • Self-assigns work as necessary to meet the team’s commitments
  • Highly proficient in writing and optimizing complex SQL
  • Experience with managing MS SQL Server (i.e., T-SQL, linked servers, proactive maintenance)
  • Experience processing and manipulating data through code (e.g., Python)
  • Experience with schema design and dimensional data modeling
  • Experience with automating data tasks


Desired Qualifications

  • Proficient in Python (i.e., dbt, great expectations)
  • Experience with data workflow orchestrators (e.g., Apache AirFlow)
  • Experience building near real-time data pipelines and models
  • Experience with PySpark or PySparkSQL
  • Experience with Databricks
  • Experience with Azure Synapse and Azure Data Factory
  • Experience processing semi-structure data (e.g., JSON)
  • Experience with code versioning and CI/CD
