The Strategic Engagements Team (SET) in the Regional & Community Outreach Department has an exciting opportunity for two Data Science Interns!

This Internship is an opportunity for undergraduates or graduate students with an interest in data science, data analytics, and business intelligence to receive professional experience as well as education and training opportunities. Interns will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to mission-critical work, learn from experts in the field, and interact with a diverse and talented staff. This internship provides an unique opportunity for students to work at the intersection of financial services, economic development, government, and technology.

SET is offering data science internships in the following areas:

  • Payments and Fintech
  • Statistical Modeling

Each area will provide a customized experience where students have the opportunity to develop their technical skills while exploring a specific domain, work with leadership on collaborative projects, and learn about the Federal Reserve System. The SET internship program is designed an experiential learning opportunity intended to enhance personal growth, career development, and academic achievement.

This position is part of the Bank’s Internship/ Co-op Program which is offered to students who are currently enrolled in graduate and undergraduate studies.. This Program identifies talented and qualified candidates who could potentially fill professional job openings in the Bank..

The Data Science Interns will support key projects through database management, quality control, computational projects, data extraction, and formatting. Interns will also be involved in translating data into action, including providing key inputs for papers, policy briefings, and presentations. Data Science Interns are tasked with understanding the different needs and analytic functions across multiple projects to best meet the broader team’s needs.

We are looking for data science interns who are able to independently translate requests into results by using databases, formulating the displays of results, and developing of code to be applied to a variety of quantitative data.

Responsibilities

Content command

  • Become familiar with one or more areas of expertise to understand the nuances of the topic to best apply data and analytical tools.
  • Work directly with subject matter experts to identify data, create relevant models, and present results to be accessible to multiple audiences
  • Create, document, and maintain created infrastructure and supporting methods for extracting and standardizing data, creating analytical processes, and communicating methods.

Data science and analytics

  • Solve complex computational and analytical challenges by investigating the data, understanding the management questions, and deriving multiple measurement strategies
  • Transform and format datasets for ongoing analyses. Catalog and incorporate data into analytical workflows. Perform quality checks.
  • Implement code to answer analytical questions and test new methods
  • Create tables, figures, charts, and other documentation for presentation.

Joint Learning

  • Participate in group learning sessions and code reviews with other team members, subject matter experts, and senior analysts
  • Participate in 1:1 or group meetings with supervisor and/or subject matter experts.
  • Participate in online modules to advance coding and analytical skills

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Demonstrate at least one year of experience in R and Python, through either personal projects, previous employment, or coursework.
  • Ability to jump into new projects quickly and get up to speed on the topic being analyzed

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong Interest and eagerness to learn new skills, either independently or in a group setting
  • Self-starter; willingness to work with minimal oversight
  • Able to confidently work with team members to understand needs and build solutions
  • Strong attention to detail

Desired:

  • Knowledge of other programming languages (i.e. Stata, SQL)
  • Prior experience translating data into visualizations (i.e. Tableau)
  • Keen interest in payments, fintechs, and other ways quantitative data can be used to inform collective action.
