The Position
We are building the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Department in Research Biology, within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). The successful candidate will develop and apply novel machine learning methods to impact biological discovery with the ultimate goal of accelerating drug discovery and improving human health.
The Role

You will join the growing department of AI/ML within Research Biology. Your peers will be machine learning and computational scientists working across different areas of the life sciences.

You will closely collaborate with chemists, biologists and computational scientists across departments in gRED.

You will develop machine learning methods for the analysis of omics, image, graph and/or sequence data.

You will help build and scale machine learning techniques to massive datasets and aid in the deployment of novel machine learning algorithms.

You will contribute to and drive publications in scientific journals and machine learning conferences, and present results at internal and external scientific meetings.
Desired Qualifications
-
Master’s degree in quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics) or, in the physical or life sciences (e.g.Chemistry, Biology) with strong focus on AI methods for the analysis of transcriptomic data; PhD strongly encouraged.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Fluent in Python and strong experience with the analysis of omics data, graph data, and/or sequence data (e.g., Natural Language Processing)

Demonstrated experience with modern Python frameworks for deep learning (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow-Keras, or JAX)

Demonstrated interest in problems across biology and chemistry as applied to the discovery and development of treatments for disease

Record of scientific experience, as evidenced by a strong publication record in scientific journals or by contribution to large-scale scientific efforts
Additional Desired Qualifications

Experience with best practices in Data Engineering and Machine Learning Ops.

Public portfolio of computational projects (available on e.g. GitHub)

Record of machine learning research excellence as evidenced by publications in computer science and machine learning conferences (e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML)

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $117,600 – 218,400 and max of hiring range. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
