Job Location: San Francisco, CA
We seek a highly motivated Principal Scientist to join the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Department (AI/ML) in Research Biology, within Genentech’s Research and Early Development (gRED)
organization, and work alongside ML research scientists, applied ML scientists, research engineers,
computational biologists, and biological chemists, working on different areas of biology and chemistry. The
successful candidate will primarily lead and execute a research program that develops novel foundational
machine learning, statistical, and/or computational methods with the aim of contributing to drug discovery.
The successful candidate will publish regularly in top-tier ML venues. The successful candidate will also
support applied machine learning projects in the broader research program of gRED by collaborating with
biologists, chemists, physicians, and computational scientists to identify impactful problems that can be solved
with machine learning and other computational techniques. Experience in biology/chemistry is not required,
but interest in biochemical drug discovery is appreciated.
- Design and execute a research program that regularly publishes in top-tier ML venues (e.g., NeurIPS,
ICLR, ICML, etc). Over time, develop into an externally recognized leader in machine learning.
- Mentor postdoctoral researchers, PhD interns, and full-time scientists.
- Conceive and lead collaborations, both internally and externally, on foundational machine learning
research.
- Maintain expertise at the forefront of multiple areas in pure machine learning.
- Collaborate with biologists, chemists, physicians, and computational scientists to identify impactful
problems that can be solved with applied machine learning and other computational techniques.
- Proactively engage with interdisciplinary teams on the datasets, scientific knowledge, and machine
learning techniques relevant to impactful problems. Design machine learning solutions, and
collaborate with applied ML scientists and research engineers to implement and evaluate solutions.
- PhD or equivalent experience in machine learning or a related quantitative field (e.g. Computer
Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology/Chemistry).
- Minimum of 1-2 years experience in foundational machine learning research and/or applied machine
learning in an academic and/or an industry setting (post-doctoral).
- Demonstrated ability to perform first-class research.
- Excellent machine learning and programming experience.
- Ability to distill complex issues and clearly articulate solutions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Interest in representation learning, generative modeling, reinforcement learning, computer vision,
natural language processing, statistical learning theory, statistics, and/or causal inference.
- Interest in molecular biology, drug discovery or optimization, structure prediction, and/or chemical
property prediction.
Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.
