Director, Global Medical Affairs Operations Data Science and Analytics

Reporting to the Senior Director of Global Medical Affairs Operations, this individual will lead the data science and analytics Medical Affairs function. Partnering within Medical Affairs as well as with Commercial, IT, and throughout Development, this role is responsible for developing the technology foundation for meaningful insights.
The head of Data and Analytics enables business performance and potential by evolving analytical platforms, tools, and methods using the existent and new data sources and techniques. This position is key to driving informed decision-making within Medical Affairs overseeing the department’s data governance and data purchasing.
This person will be responsible for developing and leading a cross-functional Data & Analytics Governance process in Medical Affairs, triaging all analytics requests, providing inputs on business rules, and prioritizing efforts to align with Medical Affairs’ plan of action and critical objectives.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Inspire and develop a high-performing and motivated global team of data scientists and data analysts across a variety of cultures, languages, and backgrounds. Execute people management activities such as employee development and performance management
  • Enable adoption and appropriate usage of the overall Medical Affairs analytics portfolio through the delivery of reliable, clean data and a standard data visualization user experience
  • Collaborate within Medical Affairs and the broader Gilead teams to establish cross-functional alignment of critical data & analytics prioritization, aligning data and analytics projects against Medical Affairs priorities, maintaining analytics roadmap and facilitating backlog and trade-off decisions
  • Responsible for executing the company’s analytics, insights, and data science strategy, through roadmap creation and project delivery with input into platform direction
  • Foster analytics innovation by sourcing innovative analytics concepts from the latest industry techniques, external partners, and innovation throughout the organization
  • Ensure Medical Affairs is appropriately leveraging new and existing data assets, adhering to data governance policies, defining consistent business rules and data definitions, and maintaining decision rights for who can approve new analytics requests.
  • Leverage organizational resources to mentor and educate Medical Affairs colleagues to increase analytics and data fluency across the broader MA organization
  • Deliver ad-hoc analytic requests into concise analyses/reports and presentations, with recommendations
  • Oversee team budget, vendor relationships, and contract negotiations.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 12+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s Degree with 10 years of relevant experience, leading in leading Data & Analytics teams. Medical Affairs experience is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in building and maintaining relationships with senior leaders as a part of a highly matrixed organization, maintaining a customer-focused mindset
  • High level of motivation and a strong desire to find creative solutions to challenging situations including thinking strategically in an ambiguous environment
  • Highly collaborative with outstanding and sophisticated communication and relationship management skills, including the ability to break down complex structures and ideas into consumable concepts for a diverse set of stakeholders, from entry to expert level
  • Demonstrated excellence in managing teams delivering on highly complex multiple projects simultaneously and developing effective creative solutions to complex problems
  • Broad awareness and working knowledge of advanced analytics areas such as AI. ML, NLP, and Predictive Analytics. Experience using common data visualization platforms (e.g., Qlik, Tableau, PowerBI). Working knowledge of statistical programming packages (e.g., SAS, Python, R) and predictive models preferred
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail, clarity, accuracy, and conciseness
  • Uncompromising ethical standards and conduct
  • Additional certifications in AWS or PMP preferred
For Colorado Job Applicants: The salary range for this position is:

$165,920.00 – $248,880.00

Gilead considers a range of factors, including background and experience, when determining base compensation. These considerations means actual compensation will vary.
