The Opportunity: (Brief Overview of the Role)
The Analyst will work in a Scrum Team, producing and delivering analysis or data products, aligned to the overall Scrum Team plans. The Analyst may be a specialist in a specific field, such as Product Analytics, and may own the planning and approach for work in their specialism, depending on size and complexity, or support a Senior Analyst in developing plans. The Analyst will be technically hands on in delivering analytics and predominantly focus on the backlog within their Scrum Team but will also be expected to share skills and knowledge to other non-analytical members within their Scrum Team or other members of the wider Analytics Chapter.
The Remediation Analytics role is specifically dedicated to ensuring the successful delivery of customer redress projects using a data driven approach. This involves using data and analytics to define the scope of potentially very complex and wide-ranging issues over different periods of time and across different segments of customers. It is essential that analytics can evidence that the population has been fully identified with supporting and auditable artefacts in place.

- The role will support the Senior Analyst in the end-to-end design and own delivery of specific elements of the analytics and data products, which will contribute to HSBC’s goals by:
- Inform and recommend to head office for data led decision making on consumer behavior, segmentation, marketing, and pricing
- Define optimized strategies, using test and learn
- Automate and scale decision making through predictive ML models and process automation
Stakeholders
Data Analytics covers all areas of WPB. Stakeholders are typically head office decision makers and budget owners, where the use of analytics and data products can inform strategies, or for sponsoring the implementation of data products for improving bank processes. The role will consult with stakeholders in understanding the business problem and take responsibility for design and delivery of the solution.

Leadership & Teamwork
- The role will typically involve working in a Scrum Team. The Product Owner will take responsibility for the overall vision and roadmap, but the Analyst will be expected to shape and develop the requirements (Epics & User Stories) for specific areas of their specialism, designing the approach and method, for less complex activity, or supporting the Senior Analyst for complex work.
- The role will take responsibility for the analytics requirements being delivered end-to-end and to standard, involving other members of the Scrum Team.
- The role will be expected to share knowledge with other members of the Scrum Team or the wider Data Analytics Chapter.
- Where the role involves working in a Scrum Team, the role will need to work flexibly with members from other departments and ensure the outcomes are achieved. The role will specialize on Analytics activity, but also should be prepared to develop and use wider skills to help the team. This may also extend to covering Product Owner or Scrum Master duties if required.
Operational Effectiveness & Control
- The usage of Customer Data and deployment of ML models is subject to regulation (e.g., GDPR) and governance to manage risks.
- The role is expected to be fully aware of relevant governance and controls in HSBC, always ensuring adherence.
The role will proactively engage in relevant governance for their project to prevent it being a blocker at implementation stage. Also, to look for opportunities to improve the overall governance submission and make it a more effective control of the risk.
What you will need to succeed in the role: (Minimum Qualification and Skills Required)
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in numerate subject, such as, mathematics, engineering, or computer science
- Experience of cloud solutions, such as data lakes and enterprise big data and analytics platforms, using GCP, such as Big Query and Data Fusion.
- Experience of open-source technologies, such as Apache Hadoop, Spark, Airflow, Python, R, TensorFlow, Airflow, Git and Jenkins.
- Experience of data technologies, including relational, dimensional, NoSQL data platforms plus metadata and data transformation tools
- Experience of traditional warehouse technologies (Teradata) and analytics platforms (SAS)
- Experience working in large and complex organizations.
- Experience of agile and agile lifecycle management tools, in particular JIRA and Confluence
- Ability to comprehend intricate and diverse range of business problems and analyses them with limited or complex data.
- Ability to develop and effectively communicate complex concepts and ideas
- Close attention to detail (there is no room for error).
- Curious approach when analyzing data to share any additional insights that may not otherwise be known.
- Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and develop end to end solutions in close collaboration with members of their Agile Squad.
- Contribute to Sprint Planning, agree estimates for User Stories and commit to the work/user stories being completed within the Sprint Cycle.
Role Dimensions
The role covers all UK Brands (HSBC, first direct, M&S Bank, John Lewis Financial Services), which generate large quantities of data within hundreds of HSBC systems, that typically get housed into a Data Warehouse for analytics consumption. Data tables may contain many millions of records with hundreds of attributes.

- Data & Analytics serve a varied range of stakeholders within WPB, and projects are diverse and driven by the current business problems that need solving. The role requires a good understanding of analytics methods and approaches, with creativity to apply the best solution to the problem, whilst managing the constraints (such as time, resources, budget, or availability of data).
- Analytics in general is evolving at a fast pace, with new methods, techniques, tooling, capabilities, and data infrastructure constantly becoming available. The role will need to keep up to date with changes, developing their skills, and knowing what’s possible for when delivering outcomes.
- The increasing usage and importance of data and AI/Machine Learning in everyday lives, is placing greater focus on the controls in place to manage risks and ethical concerns. The role will need to follow not only what usage of Data and AI/Machine Learning is allowed, but also what is fair and ethical.
Role Context
Data & Analytics is part of the Digital UK department within WPB, and the teams are split between UK offices (Birmingham, Sheffield, Chester, Leeds, London) and India (Kolkata, Bangalore). The department interfaces with all areas of WPB depending on business priorities and opportunity, but typically with head office roles where data can inform the decision making or sponsorship can be received for implementing solutions.
Working practice is predominantly adopting Scrum, with cross-functional teams created to achieve end-to-end delivery of outcomes. Depending on the Scrum Team, this may mean working close-knit with members of other departments such as Marketing or IT, and seamlessly supporting each other to get the work done.

Adheres to processes and controls to identify and mitigate risks and ensures timely escalation of control issues and reputation risks.
Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)
