Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Information Technology Division has an opening for a Business Intelligence Analyst to join the team. In this role, you will work with stakeholders, functional experts/SMEs to understand business requirements, use cases, process flows etc. and assist in tracking development efforts across IT teams. The Business Intelligence Analyst has the primary responsibility for developing and implementing BI solutions using IBM Cognos Analytics, against Oracle RDBMS and other on-prem or cloud data sources.
This position will work closely with customers, staff and vendors, in resolving support requests via phone, remote desktop sessions, and utilize a ticketing system to manage request lifecycle. You will be expected to troubleshoot issues ranging from client side browser for report authoring, interactive report execution in various formats, report scheduling and more, as well as helping users with approaches and best practices for getting the most out of our deployed solutions.
What You Will Do:
- Work with stakeholders to understand their decision support needs. Assist in the development of reports, dashboards, analytics and self-service capabilities using IBM Cognos Analytics platform and related technologies to deliver a complete solution for their business and research needs.
- Assist in the development of BI metadata to enable high performance access and content delivery through a range of services that include managed reporting as well as self-service reporting.
- Proactively assist in the assessment to address adverse performance impact to services. Assist other members of the team where needed, to address underlying issues, such as RDBMS, OS, Client browser etc.
- Assist in the development and implementation of custom scripts to automate various management and administrative functions using tools like Metamanager.
- Assist major Business Intelligence technology initiatives in support of existing and emerging business requirements. Assist in preparation of plans, schedules, contingencies, and carry out coordinated efforts with other groups in IT to accomplish the successful implementation of various technology solutions.
- Coordinate BI solution development lifecycle with appropriate version control, deployment and collaboration tools.
- Provide technical and development support to groups within the department that use IBM Cognos Analytics in their applications.
- Learn new technical skills and keep up with current skills through self-study, self-initiated technical exploration, public courses, specific assignments, and interaction with peers and experts.
What is Required:
- Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.
- Experience with data gathering, combining and presenting information from various related sources through the use of desktop tools or an enterprise BI platform.
- Familiarity with dashboarding and visualization methods using a wide variety of charts, multi axis graphs etc. to present related information and key metrics for decision making.
- Experience with managing projects and utilizing project management tracking tools.
- Excellent skills in conducting user requirements gathering sessions in a group setting. Must be able to engage users using a variety of illustrative/prototyping techniques through iterative sessions.
- Hands-on experience with IBM Cognos Analytics for developing rich BI content such as managed and ad hoc reports, interactive and visual presentations, on demand analytics etc.
- Understanding of multi-dimensional reporting in IBM Cognos that utilizes concepts like ROLAP, MOLAP and related approaches as well as their applicability in various reporting styles and use cases.
- Proficiency in working with relational database objects using SQL queries to perform data exploration, modeling use cases, mocking up data, testing etc.
- Understanding of Data Warehouse concepts such as facts, dimensions, star schema design, denormalization etc. for supporting a wide range of analytics requirements and achieving high throughput.
- Fluency with common office productivity workstation applications (spreadsheets, databases, graphics, word processing, presentation software, email clients, electronic calendaring clients, web browsers).
- Demonstrated ability to convey technical information through well-written and concise documentation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrable experience developing BI solutions using IBM Cognos. This includes developing interactive prompt driven reports in various layouts and formats, visualizations such as dashboards and stories to present information such as KPIs at a glance etc.
- Experience working with relational databases like Oracle and SQL Server to support BI solutions development. Proficient in working with tables, views and materialized views using standard desktop tools as well as Cognos query tools.
- Experience working with multi dimensional data sources such as data cubes or dimensionally modeled data in a relational database, mainly using Cognos report authoring tools. Experience with Cognos client software like framework manager, Cube designer highly desirable.
- Proven skills in conducting user interviews to gather business requirements, developing technical specifications and working with technical teams to build and implement solutions.
- Prior experience with production support operations, user support, triaging, prioritizing and routing technical issues, providing quick resolution to customers on known issues and proactive communications on planned and unplanned outages.
- Experience with SDLC and batch automation tools like Tidal, JIRA and bitbucket are highly desirable.
- Ability to respond quickly and calmly to high pressure situations. Customer oriented and a team player. Must be able to work independently and yet be able to plan and carry out coordinated efforts.

- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
