Job Description
The Environmental Isotope Systems group has an opening for a 1-YEAR Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in the development of novel machine learning and traditional geochemical models to simulate reactive transport of metals, radionuclides, and carbon species in environmental systems. The research will be focused on development of a community database based on FAIR data principles and application of these data to complex environmental systems that include nuclear waste repositories. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
In this role you will:
- Develop new approaches to expand LLNL’s database of sorption data using data science approaches.
- Develop new modeling workflows using Python and other computer languages to automate model calibration and generation of model inputs.
- Work with a team to develop new AI/ML approaches to reactive transport modeling.
- Prepare and conduct technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in geochemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, or related field.
- Experience with Python, R, etc.
- Experience with various reactive transport codes such as CrunchFlow, PHREEQC, Geochemist’s Workbench, etc.
- Experience using parameter estimation codes such as PEST or similar.
- Experience with surface complexation modeling.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications we desire
- Experience with research in the area of nuclear waste repository science.
- Experience working on database design, FAIR data practices, and community data science.

Position Information
This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
