Position Summary/Objective: This position is responsible for creating predictive models and analyzing basketball datasets through the use of advanced statistical techniques to build and maintain interpretable predictive models to aid in the decision making of Basketball Operations Executives. The Data Scientist will develop computer software applications in a variety of coding languages such as C++, Java, and others.
Essential Functions

- Work with leadership across basketball operations to increase the impact and application of analytics to understand modeling needs
- Develop, analyze, test and implement interpretable predictive models using R or Python
- Evaluate and recommend new data sources (internal and 3rd party external sources) to support player evaluation, player development and strategic decision-making
- Build pipelines for our data warehouse and internal tooling infrastructure
- Execute SQL database queries to filter, clean and prepare data
- Review and debug code
- Complete ad-hoc reports or small studies as assigned throughout the year
- Effectively communicate and explain complex technical concepts

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other
- Ability to accurately translate ideas into code.
- Experience with R or Python and pragmatic mathematic modeling
- In-depth understanding of statistical analyses, data mining techniques and working with large datasets
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with staff members at all levels
Experience: Minimum two (2) years of experience in database development, database administration or IT- related roles is preferred. Business intelligence, data warehousing, and/or data integration experience.
Knowledge of data warehouse design and integration principles Knowledge of Microsoft SQL server maintenance and operations.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field.
Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, Etc.
- Knowledgeable about software development best practices and long-term maintainability of code
- Ability to effectively diagnose, isolate, and resolve complex problems pertaining to data infrastructure, integrity, and incompatibilities
- Experience supporting or using statistical and/or data mining applications.
- Experience with SQL and relational databases is required.
- Experience with professional software engineering.
- Must have a strong understanding and passion for the game of basketball.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. Office hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM-5:00PM. Work is generally sedentary in nature. The working environment is generally favorable.
Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. This job may operate in a sports arena, which includes bleachers/steps.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee frequently is required to remain in a stationary position as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer and telephone. Staff may occasionally move boxes of merchandise weighing up to 30 pounds.
Pay Range
Salary starting at $90,000 commensurate with experience and skills.
Travel
Position may require relocation or remote work. Position may require travel to external events.
