Your Team responsibilities –
We are hiring for a team lead for a cross-functional team that will work jointly with MSCI’s Applied Data Intelligence team and ESG Ratings team.
Applied Data Intelligence team provides solutions for the full lifecycle of data content management: vendor procurement, quality analysis, usability, scalability and new product feasibility studies. We cover a growing set of asset classes and data categories including among others, market data, fundamental data, ESG data, climate data, analyst forecasts, corporate actions and MSCI data.
The ESG Ratings Operations team researches and rates companies on a ‘AAA’ to ‘CCC’ scale based on its exposure to industry specific ESG risks and its ability to manage those risks relative to peers. The team analyzes data sourced through internal and external data suppliers and follows a rule- based methodology to determine the rating. The companies rated are spread across the developed and emerging markets and range in size from large to small scale.
As an ESG Transformation SA, you will be responsible for leading and delivering on several initiatives as part of the ESG transformation agenda, to support rapidly evolving ESG landscape and its adoption in the financial market. This involves automating some legacy manual processes involving data collection, model calculations and Quality Assurance, as well as defining new workflows and Quality Assurance to support new methodology changes and products. Lead planning and execution pipeline for the overall transformation agenda.

Your key responsibilities –
- Independently leading discussions with stakeholders to understand business requirements and current workflows for ESG use cases, with an aim to implement them with a more systematic and system driven approach
- Planning and prioritizing requests to come up with milestones and deliverables for the team.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders on status updates, requirement changes and future requirements.
- Provide guidance on analyzing data trends and behavior – to be able to summarize, explore data relationships and capture anomalies in data
- Think of innovative solutions to transform legacy manual work or design new ones, and automate them using available tools
- Develop prototypes for proof of concept and take them till implementation stage by coordinating with internal stakeholders including operations leads, IT partners and Research.
- Contribute to the the execution of requests as an individual or by teaming up with other members.
- Provide training to operations teams for a seamless integration of developed solutions.
- Share knowledge internally with the broader ADI and ESG ratings team, on ESG products and use cases, best practices, cross-functional trainings, etc.
Your skills and experience that will help you excel –
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, having used it before for things like exploratory data analysis, data transformation, visualization, developing automated solutions, etc.
- Excellent communication skills
- Some experience with visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau or python visualization packages is desired.
- Experience with handling large data-sets is desired.
- Familiarity with object-oriented programming and writing code in a modular way
- Familiarity with statistics, NLP and anomaly detection techniques is desired, but not mandatory
- 5-8 years’ work experience working with data analytics or as a Python developer.
- Prior experience working with ESG or financial data will be a positive

Your Team responsibilities –
MSCI’s Data Service and Technology is responsible for managing high quality and differentiated data for all MSCI’s products – Indexes, ESG products and Risk Models. MSCI’s data organization processes over 15 TB per year and producing over 5 million individual data values daily.
The “Associate – ESG Automation” will help automate certain data operations and quality control processes and tasks using Python to improve quality and timeliness of ESG data.

- Deliver automated capabilities to quality check data in bulk
- Identify existing quality control processes that are good candidates for automation
- Work with ESG content teams to spread the adoption and use of python and other technologies as part of daily processes
- Collaborate with ESG IT team for sourcing the data from database/APIs.
Your skills and experience that will help you excel –
- Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience in a high-quality process and production -driven environment.
- Hands on knowledge of Python (working with notebooks, proficient in data manipulation using libraries such as Pandas, numpy) and its application to descriptive statistics; Exposure of using Python visualization libraries would be added advantage
- Exposure of working with SQL
- Experience in managing large volumes of data and synthesizing output for easy application
- Hands on application of different data science technologies and concepts
- ETL technology experience; advanced Excel skills; RPA experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
