Job Description

Seeking full- or part-time graduate or highly qualified undergraduate intern to work with researchers in NREL’s Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences on enhancement of tools used for integrated data collection, analysis and visualization of mobility behavior. Specific tasks may include:

  • Develop and refine data processing workflows to transform data collected by the NREL OpenPATH, and integrate it with other NREL transportation models.
  • Convert the resulting outputs into automated mobility insights for use in data dashboards or standalone visualizations
  • Work with stakeholders and senior staff to modularize the data analysis and visualization so that it can be tailored for various use cases, ranging from the individual level on a smartphone app to large scale geospatial displays on the desktop.
  • Integrate user interface improvements to “reduce clunkiness” based on stakeholder input.
  • Investigate and implement strategies to improve the performance of user interfaces, including data organization techniques.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

  • Knowledge of/experience with Javascript and Python.
  • Ability to implement end-to-end features
  • Ability to transform stakeholder requirements into compelling user-friendly visualizations.
  • Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Experience deploying online systems, including working with the unix command line, docker containers and CI/CD.
  • Passion for user-centric “design thinking”.
  • Experience with multiple visualization techniques, such as web-based data visualization, use of Github, Python and SQL/MongoDB, Javascript, CSS, and/or html programming.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data analysis/visualization, web development, and/or scientific computing.
  • Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Graduate I / Annual Salary Range: $40,500 – $64,800

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
