e have an opening for either a Software Engineer – Ground Mission Data Processing (MDP) or a Principal Software Engineer – Ground Mission Data Processing (MDP) to join our qualified, diverse team. We are seeking a team member who wants to solve interesting, complex problems to help protect our nation. We are a trusted mission payload and ground system provider with extensive experience providing end-to-end mission solutions from concept through operations and support. The team you will support is located at our Space Park campus in Redondo Beach, CA.


What you’ll get to do?

As a Software Engineer – Ground Mission Data Processing (MDP) on this team, you will support a very fast-moving team to help design, model and develop the ground system for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) low earth orbit constellation for SDA’s Tranche 1 constellation. The constellation is a mesh network of 126 optically-interconnected SVs that will provide a resilient, low-latency, high-volume data transport communications system that will be launched starting in September 2024. SDA’s vision is to deliver a minimum viable product on time, every two years to the warfighter by employing spiral development methods.

Tranche One Tracking Layer (T1TRK) is part of an ambitious space architecture to bring next-generation communications capabilities to the warfighter around the globe. This program builds upon existing Transport Layer capabilities to perform OPIR tracking missions for the DoD. You will join an integrated, agile team to expand the Tranche One Ground System portfolio on an aggressive schedule. Core Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions
  • Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software
  • Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems
  • Ensures software standards are met

Basic Qualifications fo
r Software Engineer – Ground Mission Data Processing (MDP):

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of related engineering experience, or a Master’s degree; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Proficiency in Object-Oriented software design and Java, C++, and Python
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevSecOps methodologies
  • Familiarity in Linux operating systems
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a Top Secret/SCI Clearance


Basic Qualifications for
Principal Software Engineer – Ground Mission Data Processing (MDP):

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related engineering experience, or a Master’s degree with 3 years of related engineering experience; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Proficiency in Object-Oriented software design and Java, C++, and Python
  • Experience with Agile and DevSecOps methodologies
  • Experience in Linux operating systems
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a Top Secret/SCI Clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

  • STEM degree
  • Experience working with internal and external customers
  • Previous software experience working in a C++/RHEL environment
  • Experience with Satellite Systems and/or Command and Control
  • Experience with Mission Planning
  • Experience with Mission Processing
  • Experience with Agile development, DevSecOps, and continuous integration and test
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements, streamline activities, and develop efficiencies
  • 5+ years of experience performing as a CAM managing cost, schedule, and technical teams
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a challenging work environment
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills

Salary Range: $82,400 USD – $123,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $101,400 USD – $152,200 USD
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
