Job Summary:
As part of the team in University Enrollment Analytics, the Data Engineer (DE) will provide both analytical and technical support to the division. The DE is responsible for managing and organizing data; this includes data collection, transformation, and ingestion efforts for University Enrollment systems. The Data Engineer establishes ETL procedures to support projects across the division, identifying and evaluating data sources for quality, reliability, and appropriateness, and migrating and integrating datasets as needed for use and analysis. The DE will assist in the design of data collection and analysis efforts with a focus on preventing redundancies, improving quality, and developing systems to support data collection, ingestion, and analysis. In addition, the DE designs and implements technical solutions ensuring that business needs and requirements are met, as well as provides estimation for assigned projects and tasks. Finally, the DE will assist in development, configuration and ongoing maintenance and support of the systems, (primarily Technolutions Slate and Perceptive Content) used in University Enrollment.
Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning
- Understands user objectives and goals and can translate those goals and objectives into actionable plans.
- Performs data management tasks, including organizing, conversion, de-duplication, migration, and identification and repair of data quality issues.
- Designs, develops, and implements custom data systems and reconciliation tools, processes, rules, solutions etc. to validate data, match/merge, and upload batch lists.
- Creates and tunes complex queries for data management and extraction.
- Designs and builds out technical software mechanisms to accommodate multiple integrations accurately based on complex rules and custom solutions.
- Ensures documentation and security standards/protocols are recognized and followed.
- Provides experienced troubleshooting and problem analysis/resolution for data related issues; performs experienced scripting and modifications of application and products.
- Researches and stays up-to-date with data engineering best practices and approaches.
- Participates in the development of new goals and strategies based on interactions with users.
- Partners with Student Enterprise Systems team on interface development.
Administration
- Development, testing, and integration of ETL routines using ETL tools and external programming/scripting languages as necessary.
- Automating analysis tasks using R, Python, Orange, and/or SSIS.
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation for source-to-target mapping as well as the data dictionary where needed.
- Assisting in production support by resolving source data issues and refining transformation rules to align with department objectives.
- Ensure accuracy & integrity of data and data processes.
- Evaluates feature/upgrade/change requests and recommends action.
- Identifies database and software performance issues and executes adjustments.
Development
- Prepare data for predictive and prescriptive modeling.
- Use data to discover tasks that can be automated.
- Develop reports in tools such as R, Tableau, and other reporting software.
- Researches and develops new algorithms and statistical techniques designed for analyzing data, based on department needs.
- Opens tickets with vendors as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a major such as data science, computer science, information technology, or related field; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- 2 years of data management, engineering, or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong qualitative and quantitative data manipulation skills.
- Experience with Technolutions Slate CRM.
- Experience with Perceptive Content or other ECM product.
- Experience with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.
- Experience with R, Python, Tableau.
- Knowledge of relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, Access, etc.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
- Experience in higher education environment, particularly in the enrollment area
