The AI and Analytics Team is part of Novo Nordisk’s Data Science division, where we apply sophisticated algorithms and machine learning techniques to some of the hardest problems in the discovery and development of new healthcare solutions. The Position
Recognized as a key leader in Novo Nordisk’s Data Science efforts, the Director of Data Solutions Engineering will drive activities in supporting multiple AI and Analytics research teams. These responsibilities will include bringing elements of appropriate data architecture and engineering to develop custom data solutions for various analytical projects across a multitude of different data modalities, including real world data, imaging, omics, devices and more. The individual will be a recognized expert in AI and ML systems, tools, approaches and technologies for a variety of applications and datasets, including cloud engineering, software engineering, and AGILE development practices. The Director of Data Solutions Engineering acts independently as a leader, framing and driving innovation and project initiatives, aligned with the leading Corporate Vice President and collaborating closely with other AI/ML peer leaders. The Director leads a team of individuals to deliver on a portfolio of projects across multiple therapeutic areas and data modalities covering multiple drugs across all phases of development. These projects will deliver custom data solutions leveraging and integrating data from a multitude of internal systems, data stores, data lakes and platforms. The Director leverages their domain knowledge in data engineering and algorithm development, as well as potential prior leadership experience, to ensure their team is developing and delivering solutions representing the latest state of the art in data engineering. The Director not only guides the team in the development of efforts which have a global impact on Novo Nordisk’s efforts in this area, but moreover is responsible for department budgets, recruiting, and other leadership activities. Furthermore, the Director will actively coach more junior colleagues in both professional development and project execution, setting technical direction and influencing the progression of initiatives across team boundaries. The Director is perceived as an expert across the EVP area, anticipates internal and/or external business challenges and issues, and drives innovation in their field of expertise. Relationships
The Director Data Solutions Engineering reports to the relevant Corporate Vice President (CVP) in the global Data Science function. Internal partners include other team leaders in the specific CVP area, as well as more broadly in Data Science. Furthermore, key partners and stake holders include global clinical, medical and biological experts, colleagues in IT, and other experts across US and Denmark. External relationships include relationships with commercial and academic collaboration partners.
Essential Functions
- Recruit, manage and lead a global team to develop AI and ML solutions
- Drive implementation of data science best practices within the team
- Collaborate across various data science, ML, AI, imaging, bioinformatics, real-world evidence and other research teams to build modern data solutions
- Interface with business partners to lead architecture and development of enterprise cloud-based data solutions and pipelines that feed into data science projects
- Collect relevant data elements and implement data pipelines (data acquisition, preparation, cleaning, and consolidation) as an integral part of data science activity
- Be a company-wide influential thought leader across Novo Nordisk globally for identification and implementation of evidence-based solutions using data science.
Physical Requirements
5%-20% overnight travel required.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD preferred. Degree within computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, statistics, or a related quantitative discipline is preferred
- Master’s Degree with 8+ years’ relevant experience, or PhD with 6+ years’ relevant experience. Minimum of Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years’ relevant experience can be considered

Relevant experience includes
- Building data warehousing solutions, integrating services, and building ETL pipelines for various data science and business needs
- Gather/organize large & complex data assets, recommend appropriate data models for different needs and implement systems for data ETL, audit, QC, governance, and optimized consumption
- Ensure high availability, scalability, latency, governance, reusability, consistent and security in implemented systems
- Partner with business owners, data scientist, engineering, and IT understand business needs, translate into technical specification, and prioritize implementation plan
- Ensure the quality of the data in coordination with data analysts, data scientists and business partners (peer validation)
- Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommending data cleansing/quality solutions
- Experience developing and deploying ML solutions in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Experience mentoring and/or building a team of engineers
- Experience working with data science teams with conceptual knowledge on data science project lifecycles and techniques

Preferred experience includes
- Expertise of Diabetes, Obesity, or other Novo Nordisk portfolio-related disease states along with the molecular and physiological role of drug, food, and other factors relating to the diseases. Preferred, but not required
- Experience in pharmaceutical industry, healthcare industry, regulated medical device development or in another regulated field
- Experience in leading and managing junior colleagues
- Experience with SQL, DynamoDB, RedShift, EFS, EMR, EBS, ElastiCache and other relational/non-relational database technologies/concepts
- Experience with AWS data-related services such as Storage Gateway, CloudWatch, Glue, Athena, S3, Lambda, Data Pipeline, Data Migration, Step functions
- Experience with Real World Data (e.g., EHR, Claims), standard data models (e,g, OMOP, FHIR), clinical data models (e.g., SDTM, Adam), and others preferred
- Experience with CI/CD, basic ETL practices such profiling, cleansing, transforming, developing and documenting data structures, schemas and dictionaries
- Working knowledge of scripting languages (Python, R, Scala, Julia a plus)
- Experience working within compliance (e.g.: quality, regulatory – data privacy, GxP, SOX) and cybersecurity requirements is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to generate valuable and relevant ideas, create concepts based on ideas, and develop new products based on concepts
- Ability to set data science project metrics and drive activities to meet those metrics
- Ability to set a department budget, and maintain activities within financial targets
