The Position
Recognized as a key global leader both within Novo Nordisk’s scientific efforts and outside Novo Nordisk. The Lead Data Scientist (Integrated Omics) leverages their extensive domain knowledge in high dimensional omics data collection, processing, and analyses as well as software engineering in a data science context, to influence the direction of research in Clinical Data Science at Novo Nordisk. The Lead Data Scientist will work closely with multiple business units globally in the strategic direction and execution of data science efforts in terms of utilizing large-scale omics datasets to drive drug development. They collaborate with other units to ensure a strong portfolio of research projects, maximizing impact for our patients and business.
Relationships
The Lead Data Scientist reports to the Director of Integrated Omics. Internal partners include data scientists, biostatisticians, engineers, software developers, technology scouts & partnership developers, system engineers, designers, anthropologists, medical doctors, IT supports, and others across US and Denmark. External relationships include relationships with commercial and academic collaboration partners.
Essential Functions
- Develop, implement and maintain bioinformatics workflow in the cloud or on-prem
- Develop and validate algorithms based various bioinformatics approaches in the Omics space
- Analyze large omics datasets to connect molecular insights to clinical applications
- Clean and curate large omics (public and internal) datasets for enabling FAIR for omics data in the organization
- Work with product team and other experts to identify opportunities for impact and maximize value of omics to drug development
- Develop, implement and deploy ML approaches for analyzing and integrating large omics datasets
- Develop visualization and analytic tools to communicate results or enable end-users to explore omics data and results
- Support several cross-functional teams to develop and analyze omics data
- Drives virtual global team meetings regularly
- Collaborates with other team members to set strategic goals for data science research across Novo Nordisk
- Raise the level of competency in the team by seeking and sharing domain knowledge in the area of Omics Data Science, as well as Novo Nordisk’s therapy areas
- Actively mentors more junior Data Scientists with an eye on the long-term development of competencies both for the individuals, as well as across Novo Nordisk as a whole
- Drive the implementation of data science best practices across Novo Nordisk
- Demonstrates ability to drive frequent collaborations with external commercial and academic partners
Physical Requirements
10-20% overnight travel required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree or PhD preferred. Degree within computer science, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline preferred.
- A Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years’ relevant experience, or Master’s Degree with 5+ years’ relevant experience, or PhD with 4+ years’ relevant experience can be considered

Relevant experience includes:
- Ability to develop and validate algorithms against clinical data, ensuring appropriateness of fit for data science processes.
- Experience with various bioinformatics approaches, techniques and tools.
- Experience with bioinformatics workflow languages, e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake, etc
- Extensive experience with working with large-scale omics datasets and across different omics modalities
- Experience with integrated analyses of multi-omics data to build models and drive biological insights for drug development
- Experience with software development which includes writing high quality code processing data using Python, R, or Matlab.
- Ability to perform in-depth data analysis and present results and conclusions to engineering and leadership teams.
- Experience in data management, database management system, and familiarity with NoSQL and/or Graph database.
- Experience in pharmaceutical industry, healthcare industry, regulated medical device development or in another regulated field.
- Experience with containerization and standard cloud services such as AWS S3, EC2, and Lamba Function.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Detail oriented with strong documentation skills
