BWXT is currently seeking a Data Scientist for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven – be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

AT Research is seeking a talented scientist with data science, statistics and/or machine learning skills for supporting a wide range of nuclear products for power, propulsion, and medicine. The successful Data Scientist will work with design and manufacturing engineers to innovate and build data acquisition systems, analytical and machine/deep learning applications, and systems for automating equipment for quality support.

Job Description / Duties

  • Generate data with instrumentation and sensor suite design and implementation.
  • Write algorithms to process and curate data, such as, with Python data cleaning methods, time-series or machine vision techniques.
  • Develop empirical data models and/or physics simulation models.
  • Design experiments, conduct data visualization, statistical and graphical analysis.
  • Write machine/deep learning applications for process prediction.
  • Participate in a diverse portfolio of engineering projects that also includes opportunities in design or manufacturing engineering, data architecture, and physics or multi-physics simulation products.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • A concentration in or project experience with applying data science techniques is required.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience is required.
  • Must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple R&D teams, systems and developing products.
  • Analytical programming skills in C++, Python, SQL, or R is required.
  • Comfort using skills related to working with sensors to extract data into unstructured datasets is desirable.
  • Ability to run engineering simulation software (MCNP, Fluent, Solidworks) or nuclear codes is a plus.
  • Experience with statistical techniques, machine learning methods, or design of experiments is a plus.
  • Travel (10-20%) domestic and international is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
