Position / Title: Data Science – Intern

Pretium

Pretium is a specialized alternative investment management firm focused on U.S. residential real estate, residential credit, and corporate credit with approximately ~$50 billion of assets under management. Position

We are seeking a 2023 Summer Intern on the Quantitative Strategies team. This position will be part of our Pretium Summer Internship Program that will provide a unique experience and invaluable look into a rapidly growing asset manager, working with industry leaders on meaningful projects. Interns will have the opportunity to make significant professional contributions while developing expertise in a dynamic team environment. This internship will provide a unique opportunity to apply data science for developing and training big data models in area of finance. Intern will also get exposed to AWS machine learning tech stack, use of spark based MLLib libraries, distributed data processing and distributed databases. This position is based in New York City aligning to our hybrid in office policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and calibrate statistical models for prepays, defaults, delinquencies and transition in residential mortgage sector based on historic data available for more than 30mm household.
  • Work on Spark/Hadoop clusters on AWS and train ML models including XGBoost, MLLib packages
  • Deployment and maintenance of models, create dashboards and notebooks for analysis as well as onboarding of data into our in-house analytical platform.

Requirements

  • GPA 2 or above preferred
  • Candidate must be enrolled in a PhD or Masters program in Statistics, Machine Learning or a Related Field
  • Must have experience in classical statistical techniques, ML techniques including decision trees & deep learning.
  • Excellent programming skills (C++, python), SQL, pyspark etc.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Highly proactive with a strong work ethic and ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills (both written and verbal)
  • Passion to use data and collaborate with broader teams
  • Strong desire to learn

Compensation for this role for a candidate in New York City is expected to be paid at an hourly rate between $40.87 – $48.18.
