Internship Description
Background:
The Bureau for Global Health (GH) provides essential technical leadership and support on global health issues to Agency leadership, USAID Missions, other USAID Bureaus and Independent Offices (B/IOs), and others in the global health community. USAID’s global health efforts, grounded in investments in health systems strengthening and breakthrough innovation, are focused around three strategic priorities: Preventing child and maternal deaths; controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and combating infectious diseases. As the Agency’s lead in responding to these critical priorities, the Bureau for Global Health is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and comprises eight offices and one center that support the technical and programmatic needs of USAID’s global health efforts.
The Office of the Assistant Administrator, commonly referred to as the GH “Front Office,” provides oversight for all Global Health programs, support to the field, research, legislative relations, and external affairs.
The GH Data Visualization Intern (Intern) will provide support to the Front Office and work directly with the GH Senior Data Advisor.
Introduction:
We are looking for a Data Visualization Intern to work closely with the GH Front Office Senior Data Advisor, as well as the broader Front Office team to analyze health data and create informative data visualizations for senior leadership and bureau consumption. As a Data Visualization Intern you will be passionate about global health and development issues. You will work flexibly with numerous data tools and systems to extract, analyze and visualize data that create high quality insights and drive strategic decision making.

To be effective, the intern will need to learn from these other teams, especially technical teams and overseas USAID Missions.
Essential Duties:
- Assisting with data analysis and visualization of global health monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and other data to inform strategic discussions about the direction of global health programming.
- Having ownership of one or several projects, under the supervision and with the support of the Senior Data Advisor, related to developing and maintaining high-impact visuals to identify trends, outliers, and key issues for strategic discussions in GH.
- Working with the Senior Data Advisor to build, maintain and/or enhance systems and tools that generate sophisticated data visuals and communicate clear strategic messages for the GH Front Office using tools best fit to purpose (such as R, Tableau, Excel and Adobe Illustrator).
- Providing graphic design support to add “finishing touches” to existing visuals to enhance the clarity of messages being communicated.
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
- Increase knowledge and skills in strategy development that supports data visualization through global health program implementation.
