Responsibilities
The Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research (BTCCCR) seeks a Lead Data Scientist/Bioinformatician to help build and supervise a team of data analysts focused on pediatric cancer genomics datasets. This position will collaborate with clinicians, research scientists and developers to guide analysis of genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic and proteomics-based datasets. The BTCCCR has strengths in pediatric cancer models and the successful applicant will work in a team-based environment on a variety of different malignancies including brain tumors, leukemias and solid tumors to apply omics approaches to relevant model systems. The successful applicant will work with patient-derived data from innovative clinical trials including immunotherapies and novel small molecules. This position will also interface with leaders in single cell technology development at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and University of Washington specializing to implement new single cell epigenomic and transcriptomic-based methods within the BTCCCR. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to harmonize efforts with the Research Scientific Computing Team to provide support and training to researcher partners to improve technical literacy and programming skills across the organization. Provide technical and scientific leadership for the team and play critical role in development of the BTCCCR Epigenomic Medicine program including adoption of new technologies, approaches, and platforms to support the funded research objectives of center members. Description:
- Provide consulting supporting BTCCCR goals and initiatives, identifying potential areas for development of new methods, ensuring center researchers are appropriately using and analyzing omics datasets. Provides technical leadership by working with Lead Data Analyist and Investigators on initiatives. Implements best practices for data storage and organization as advised by Lead Data Analyist.
- Apply expert problem-solving and critical thinking in data science and analytics methodologies.
- Provide consulting to identify requirements and create technical solutions to scientific problems, and make recommendations that help set strategic and technical direction of bioinformatics within BTCCCR
- Mentors peers as needed.
- Attend international conferences on Bioinformatics and Data Analysis to keep abreast of cutting-edge approaches that may enhance the mission of BTCCCR investigators.
Requirements
Required Education/Experience: – Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM or relevant analytical field that demonstrates analytical and technical competency and 8+ years as a Senior Data Scientist OR a Ph.D. in a STEM or relevant analytical field that demonstrates analytical and technical competency and 3+ years or relevant work experience in data science – Highly skilled in statistics as well as machine learning/data mining/etc., including experience with different paradigms of statistical inference (frequentist, Bayesian, information-theoretic) and differences between modeling for explanation and modeling for prediction – Significant experience developing and using statistical models and algorithms to drive business or clinical value – Advanced experience in least one data science language (e.g., R, Python) – Expert in use of data visualization for non-technical audiences – Experience with at least one notable BI reporting tool (e.g., Tableau, QlikView, PowerBI, Business Objects, html/d3) – Experience working with source control tools and version management – Experience in data extraction using at least one data manipulation language/package(e.g., SQL, R-dplyr, SAS DATA step, Python-pandas)- Experience interacting with technical and non-technical leadership as a member of a delivery team supporting integrated data science products and solutions for a wide range of customer groups Required Credentials: – N/A Preferred:
- Highly skilled with multi-omics or multi-modal high dimensional data analysis and pipelines, e.g. next-generation sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, phenotypic readouts, imaging, and clinical dataExperience training junior students or staff
- Expert in one or more high-throughput methods such as GWAS, WES, WGS, RNA-Seq, ssRNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, etc.
- Expert in use of data visualization and communication for technical and non-technical audiences, questions, issues, and concerns, both technical and operational
- PhD in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics or related discipline
- Experience with large-scale studies such as GWAS, population genetics, and systems medicine approaches
- Expert with command line, linux environments, and running jobs on high-performance computing clusters
- Advanced knowledge of cell and molecular biology
- Solid understanding of biostatistics and experimental design principles
- Experience with ML applications for scientific problems is a plus
- Familiarity with scrum/agile development best practices
- Experience mentoring junior team members
