What To Expect
Disclaimer: This position is expected to start around May 2023 and continue through the entire term (i.e., through August/September) or into early Fall 2023 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time, for most internships. Please consider before applying. International students: if your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. Again, please do not apply until you know you can work 40 hours per week. This is required for external applicants. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

About The Team
Thermal Engineering is the team behind the Tesla Heat Pump, Supermanifold, Octovalve, Superbottle, Airwave, Bioweapon Defense Mode and more. Our multi-disciplinary team of engineers work together across phases of development from idea inception, through prototyping, production, and fleet support.
Thermal R&D is responsible for system-level architecture (including radiators, refrigerant heat exchangers, compressors, fans, pumps, etc.) supporting the cabin, battery, and powertrain across all Tesla vehicles. We’re looking for a key player who can help drive data analytics and work cross-functionally to uncover opportunities in product improvements. Candidates should have experiene working with large data sets, and using data to help create critical metrics, characterize engineering systems, optimize product performance, and build useful data pipelines, visualizations, and dashboards.
What You’ll Do
- Analyze vehicle data and extract useful statistics/insights that drive actionable recommendations to improve product eprformance/quality and customer experience
- Write efficient SQL/Python code and complex queries across extensive data sets
- Build effective models to fuel analytical frameworks that drive material product improvements in hardware optimization, controls, and vehicle diagnostics
- Wrok effectively with engineers and conduct end-to-end analyses, from data requirement gathering, to data processing and modeling
- Identify, analyze, and interpret trends of patterns in complex data sets and depict the story via dashboards and reports
- Automate analyses and author pipelines using SQL, Python, and Airflow based ETL framework
What You’ll Bring
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, Statistics, or related field
- Strong proficiency in SQL, Python for writing efficient queries, data manipulation, and analysis
- Strong knowledge of data visualization techniques and tools using Matplotlib, Plotly, etc.
- Strong problem solving skills to help refine problem statements and solve them with the available data
- Exceptional organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to take on projects with a sense of ownership and entrepeneurial mindset
- Experience with distrubuted computing (Spark/Hive/Hadoop)
- First principles understanding of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics with relevant project/research experience
- Experience creating data products and dashboards in Tableau, R Shiny, or D3
- Experience building machine learning models with demonstrated impact
- Experience communicating the results of analyses with stakeholders/leadership teams, and working cross-functionally across different teams
- Experience in developing numerical models and experimental characterization of thermal/fluid/refrigerant systems and head exchanges

Expected Compensation
$20.00 – $50.00/hour + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
