The AI & Autonomy Innovation Area is looking for a Chief Engineer with both a deep understanding of the current AI & Autonomy landscape as well as an understanding of emerging challenges in the public sector to help focus MITRE’s R&D and catalyze new opportunities to have impact.
Job Responsibilities:

Strategic planning and shaping Research and Development (R&D) activities within the AI & Autonomy Innovation center to achieve mission impact
-
Oversee AI and Autonomy initiatives to assess and continually improve technical quality in partnership with Chief Engineers across MITRE’s business units
-
Serve as an interface with the MITRE’s Internal Research and Development Program
-
Provide oversight of activities supporting the AI and Mission Focused Autonomy platforms to ensure MITRE Labs is addressing top mission challenges

Work shape in collaboration with MITRE portfolios to focus on platform development and advancing MITRE’s prototyping capabilities to test and evaluate new concepts and designs
Technical Quality & Impact
-
Lead technical quality efforts and development of technical quality standards within the AI & Autonomy Innovation Center
-
Partner with business and people leadership, providing input on quality of goals to operationalize the good growth strategy – this includes quality of staff hired, development of staff, and training initiatives to ensure appropriate technical quality is achieved

Ensure the technical strength of the work program by shaping its content, participating in technical product definition and reviews, and bringing a perspective that reflects knowledge of the domain, understanding of the state of the art and practice in technology, and comprehension of MITRE and key external communities

Ensure individual projects are driving change at a technical level, while partnering with project leaders to ensure the project itself is the right level impact for MITRE, during its inception and onset
Strategy Development
-
Define and evolve the research vision and strategy for AI & Autonomy innovation area and ensure that it is aligned with corporate, center, and FFRDC strategies, outcomes, and business plans
Staff Development
-
Collaborates with the department leadership in deliberately growing the organization’s core competency areas and ensuring deliberate early career workforce shaping by growing expertise based on training, mentoring, and project work opportunities
Partnerships and Initiatives
-
Develop and maintain relationships with key technical leaders across MITRE program divisions, MITRE Labs, MITRE Platforms, and externally for new project collaboration opportunities, technical skillset development, and technical quality

Support MITRE internal R&D program to fund and pursue projects beyond our direct sponsor requests
-
Partner with Innovation leads Outcome Leads, and Project Leaders to identify and execute work proposals aimed at injecting innovation across critical department projects and potentially developing new program areas

Coordinate technical outreach to industry, academia, and other stakeholders, ensuring that best practices and technologies are brought to bear on technical products
Required Qualifications:
-
The candidate should be a recognized expert in at least one of the following areas: Machine learning, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems
-
Experience in Natural Language Understanding, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Data Mining or Machine Intelligence
-
Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical materials to nontechnical audiences
-
Can-do attitude and demonstrated history of fulfilling the above tasks, working both collaboratively and independently as needed
-
Experience with planning, executing, and presenting complex trade studies while balancing cost and schedule constraints, mission analysis, information assurance, systems integration, and understanding of the relationships between operational, technical, and system’s architecture
-
Demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal and written communication skills
-
Demonstrated proficiency in virtual and live presentation of complex technical issues
-
Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Ph.D. in computer science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience
-
Relevant work experience, including full time industry experience or as a researcher in a lab
-
Ability to create, articulate, and motivate visionary concepts and outcomes and achieve practical outcomes in complex, cross-FFRDC environments
-
Demonstrated expertise in broad areas of AI and Autonomy spanning across civil sectors and national security missions
-
Demonstrated understanding of the civil sector and the national security mission space, major sponsors and programs, and external research landscape
-
Ability to build strong internal and external partnerships; experience with leveraging solutions from leading academic and commercial research groups
