Job Location: Charlottesville, VA

The School of Data Science (SDS) is piloting a new program called Mentoring to Increase Neurodiversity in Data Science (MINDS) for young adults. The program is a collaborative effort between SDS, the Brain Institute and the STAR Autism Initiative and is supported by Jefferson Trust grant funding. We are seeking candidates to serve as tutors/mentors for approximately 6 students in the pilot program for fall 2022 and spring 2023. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the program and positively impact the lives of students in the program.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide data science instruction (customized tutoring) to 1 or more neurodiverse young adult high school graduates. The instruction will be delivered virtually via Zoom. Meetings will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time between you and the student (live synchronous time each week is anticipated to be 3 hours). Topic coverage in fall 2022 is intended to provide the student with a practical/applied foundation in data science and should include, for example, basic statistical concepts, Python programming, data visualization on data sets of interest to the student. In spring 2023, the focus will be on guiding/supporting the student as they develop a goal for one independent and one joint project (2-3 students together) designed to explore a topic of interest to the student and provide an opportunity to apply what they learned in the fall to new data (e.g., an open data set).
  • Serve as a mentor to the young adult and strive to increase their confidence in their ability to learn data science concepts in a tailored approach.
  • Work with project leadership to address issues as they arise.
  • Familiarity with the concepts being covered in the social skills training component of the program so that you can reinforce and model the behaviors they are learning.
  • Attend an orientation (likely in early August) which will include teaching strategies and what to expect when working with this population

Ideal background:

  • Completion of appropriate coursework (e.g., statistics/probability, calculus, programming in Python) – completion of MSDS prerequisites and MSDS summer courses are appropriate
  • Experience tutoring technical content
  • Comfort working in virtual environments (all work is anticipated to be performed remotely) – Comfort using technology such as Zoom, Discord and/or Slack
  • Familiarity with Python, GitHub, Jupyter Notebooks openly available data, etc.
  • Interest in or experience working with neurodiverse populations

Estimated number of hours each week to prepare content for live sessions, conduct live sessions and assess the student’s progress is approximately 10 – 15 hours at $18 for 1 neurodiverse young adult. There is the possibility of mentoring/teaching 2 neurodiverse young adults up to a maximum of 20 hours a week.

Position begins early August 2022 and runs through May of 2023 (2 semesters). Work will be performed remotely.
