Position Summary:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Lead Database Administrator to plan, coordinate, deploy and manage complex database management systems, processes, and related technologies in support of data warehouse and analytics initiatives. Primary duties include providing operational support for multi-terabyte database management systems and solutions built on them to ensure performance, capacity, service, and security level expectations are met. This position is responsible for provisioning database system resources, continual monitoring and alert follow-up, database backup, disaster mitigation and recovery. Involvement in root cause analysis of adverse performance events and subsequent resolution by utilizing tracing, query and database optimization is expected. Research of new and upgrades to existing database system technologies, review of business value with stakeholders and implementation of new technology is part of this role.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with development staff, customers, and other DBAs to translate project goals into database models.
  • Review of business value with stakeholders
  • Serves as an expert consultant for both applications and other systems support staff on questions and problems with database design, usage, tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Installs, administers, and fine-tunes database engine.
  • Provisioning database system resources
  • Continual monitoring and alert follow-up
  • Involvement in root cause analysis of adverse performance events and subsequent resolution by utilizing tracing, query, and database optimization
  • Manages data access and administers database security.
  • Develops and implements change management procedures including version control.
  • Develops database backup, disaster mitigation and recovery.
  • Research of new and upgrades to existing database system technologies
  • Prepares reports for management on database growth and performance as needed.
  • Provides technical information, guidance, and training to junior staff members, as assigned.

Salary: $75,000 to commensurate (Paygrade 5B)

Position Qualifications:

Education Required

Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Engineering or MIS or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS SQL Server 2014/2016/2019 database management system administration experience (typically 5-7 years) in an enterprise environment
  • MS SQL database index, index management and database statistics proficiency
  • MS Windows Server 2012 R2/2016/2019 clustering implementation experience
  • Microsoft Business Intelligence (MSBI) stack concepts and usage experience
  • MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) administration experience
  • Working experience organizing and managing projects and documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • MS SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) administration experience
  • MS SQL database, query, and SSIS package performance tuning and optimization proficiency
  • MS SQL database replication concepts, architecture and implementation
  • SAN connected MS SQL server architecture and implementation
  • Active Directory and Kerberos authentication for MS SQL Implementation
  • ETL and data quality tool administration and usage
  • PowerShell scripting proficiency
  • MS SQL Server certification
