This is a new role with the Research Amplification team of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), an Underwriters Laboratories Research Institute. Reporting to the Director of Research Amplification, the Data Scientist provides dedicated marketing analytics and insights support and is responsible for measuring and analyzing performance of FSRI stakeholder engagement activity to maximize the organization’s effectiveness and efficiency, optimizing return on investment (ROI).

Key responsibilities include managing and evolving the FSRI engagement dashboard, developing a reporting cadence, and reporting on amplification activities through the identification, monitoring and interpretation of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

The ideal candidate will be an inquisitive learner with an ability to analyze information from a variety of data sources, identify trends at macro and micro levels and confidently share data-driven findings. Working under the guidance of the Director of Research Amplification and in collaboration with other members of the Research Amplification team and stakeholders across functional areas, the analyst will develop processes and/or systems to assess sentiment and opportunity as well as segment stakeholder for strategic engagement as well as collect, analyze and demonstrate engagement efficiency, effectiveness, lead quality and ROI across demand generation, social media, digital and web, LMS and offline campaigns and tactics. This may involve analysis across a broad range of market segments, industry and service offerings, and engagement initiatives. S/he is able to keep abreast of best practices and industry trends in order to provide continuous calibration of metrics and reporting.

The reporting and recommendations from the Data Scientist will help inform strategies, execution plans and continual process improvements with a keen focus on our ability to attract and grow the value of contacts from the top of the funnel through conversion. This role requires a mix of business acumen and technical expertise, along with the communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships across functional roles and organizational groups.

Uses advanced mathematical and statistical concepts and theories to collect and analyze data and construct solutions to complex research and stakeholder problems. Performs advanced statistical analysis on experimental or organizational data to identify, validate and quantify trends or patterns based on guidance from research or research amplification leaders. Constructs advanced predictive models, algorithms and probability engines to support data analysis or product functions; verifies model and algorithm effectiveness based on real-world results. Designs experiments and methodologies to generate and collect data for organizational use.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies what data is available and relevant, including internal and external data sources, leveraging new data collection processes such as sensors, open data, and social media feeds.
  • Assists with the definition and development of user-friendly reports and graphics that integrate and convey complex data/information.
  • Maintains data catalog(s) to provide key data sources to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conducts data analyses using traditional techniques, complex statistical methods and machine learning. Identifies and adapts open source algorithms to conduct analyses.
  • Transforms complex data and results into creative graphs, tables, charts and other graphics to present and/or share the data in a compelling and concise manner.
  • Assists with developing programming solutions to conduct data preparation, analysis and visualization in support of statistical modeling, data analytics and interpretation.
  • Builds models to explore complex organizational and safety science systems.
  • Conducts data validation, statistical analyses, and data mapping.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

  • University Degree (Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree) in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or a related discipline plus generally 3-5 years of experience in statistical analysis or data science.
  • Solid technical knowledge and experience working with R, SAS, Java or Python programming language.
  • Ability to develop solutions to loosely defined business or research problems by leveraging pattern detection over large data sets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with technical and nontechnical internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to organize, analyze and correlate data information including skills in dashboarding.
  • Skilled in versioning best practices, i.e. GitHub, Gitlab, Code Commit.
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Willingness to learn and research new concepts and technologies in quick Proof of Concepts
