Ph.D. in Plant Breeding with a minor in Statistics OR Ph.D. in Engineering with Data Science/Machine Learning experience in plant science domain problems.
Experience working in interdisciplinary teams with integrated projects involving plant sciences and machine learning research.
Experience in plant breeding pipelines and stress trait phenotyping in soybean crops.
Published first authored or first co-authored peer-reviewed technical journal article(s) in plant science/breeding problems with use of machine learning methods.

Job Description:
The Research Data Scientist will be an integral member of the A.K. Singh team, which works on interdisciplinary research projects spanning plant breeding, genetics, phenomics, and statistics as a participant in the Soynomics team. This is a three year fixed term position with possibility of renewal.
Areas of Responsibilities
  • Manage and update relevant software that will be utilized for phenotyping sensors using ground robots and aerial drones.
  • Lead a team of students and researchers on interdisciplinary projects bridging plant sciences/engineering/data analytics and in a broader Singh group breeding and cultivar development activities.
  • Provide technical and data science support to breeding pipelines for soybean, millets, and legume crops.
Examples of Duties
  • Develop, manage, and maintain software for data science/machine learning research related to plant phenomics and breeding activities.
  • Provide problem formulation and troubleshooting help to Soynomics team members on breeding and phenomics activities.
  • Provide help with standardizing software/data analytics pipelines for breeding and phenomics research activities.
  • Design and develop lead grant projects on ML-focused applications in plant sciences and breeding.
  • Set up and manage the data analytics pipeline for the breeding program. Lead projects, i.e., grant writing and peer-reviewed paper writing, on projects that related to breeding and/or phenomics related to data science/machine learning applications.
  • Solve complex issues using highly-developed problem resolution skills in academic research program teams.
  • Utilize high-level professional knowledge and expertise to provide guidance, recommendations, and set standards related to group strategy, policy, and mission, with interactions with broader stakeholders.
  • Lead projects of moderate to high scope and complexity with broad impact.
  • Supervise other research staff (i.e., leads a small work team) in the team.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to graduate students and undergraduate students with research projects.

  • Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
  • Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
  • May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
  • May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
  • Provides guidance to students
