Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Data Services and Business Analytics, the Foundationโ€™s Sr. Associate Director of Data Insights works closely with key stakeholders in Development, Finance, Information Systems, and other areas to manage the departmentโ€™s reporting and analytic fulfillment & quality for the Foundation. This position serves as liaison to the Information Systems department for specific initiatives and tasks.

The Associate Director incumbent oversees the day-to-day operations of the data warehouse, fundraising analytics and reporting solutions. The incumbent will continually evaluate and identify new opportunities in informatics, technology, and Business Intelligence (BI)/data warehousing. They will also participate in the selection and implementation of new technologies.

They will work closely with Development staff on data and reporting projects, and with peers on enhancements to business processes and technical solutions.

Job Responsibilities


Oversee Data Warehouse, Fundraising Analytics and Reporting Solutions and Fulfillment

  • Using non-profit or other business experience, direct the data warehouse and BI development initiatives
  • Oversee and manage operational reporting and ad-hoc list fulfillment
    • Collaborate to prioritize customer needs, allocate resources, and ensure analytic utilization within the departmentโ€™s teams
    • Ensure accurate, formatted information for immediate operational use at all departmental levels
    • Review daily/weekly/monthly/yearly reports
    • Ensure that data in Fundraising DW is correct and reports meet departmental needs
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a catalog of strategic reports for the Foundation
Job Responsibilities (Continued)
  • Oversee and manage Information Analysis
    • Ensure integrity of all subsequent manipulation and analysis
    • Supervise and perform data analysis including but not limited to: correlation, impact, distribution, trending and projection
    • Oversee, manage, create, deploy, and maintain BI solutions
  • Manage the development and maintenance of a data warehouse and trusted reporting data marts/blocks
    • Manage key data resources
    • Supervise the maintenance of tables, views, indexes, functions, stored procedures, and SQL packages
    • Follow Data Warehouse Design Principles (Kimball)
  • Prepare supporting business and technical documentation and specifications
  • Serve as lead on use of all reporting tools

Supervise Staff

  • Lead a team and provide technical direction to team of 2 analysts/report writers
  • Supervise problem management, client relations, and resource management
  • Supervise staff in reporting quality and maintenance
  • Prioritize requests in queue
  • Institute training on reporting and other analytic tools

Support Projects for New Technologies

  • Work closely with Director of Development Platforms and Systems to:
    • Create proof of concept to test new technologies, as it relates to reporting and analytics
    • Implement new data story telling technology as best suited for Development Department
Required Education and Experience

Bachelors Degree

Five (5) years of Business Intelligence/Business Analytics experience


Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: MA, MS, or MBA preferred

Preferred Experience:
  • Knowledge of non-profit business and processes
  • Five (5) years of Data Warehousing experience
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Supervisory experience of a technical team
  • Comfortable with numbers and logic
  • Experience working with project teams and to deadlines
  • Documentation and report writing skills
  • Presentation and communication skills โ€“ must be comfortable moving between the worlds of technology and fundraising, and able to communicate with staff in both
Additional Technical Requirements
  • Query Tools: Use of SQL Server Business Intelligence Tools (Reporting Services and Analysis Services), plus other analytical and data visualization tools
  • Data Mining & Statistics: Familiarity with data mining tools and technologies and/or statistical packages such as SPSS or SAS; knowledge of basic statistical concepts and techniques
  • Server and Database Skills: Knowledge of Application Databases, Relational Databases, Report Servers, and SQL Knowledge/Experience โ€“ particularly with the MS SQL Server platform (SQL 2008/2012); Writing queries and SQL; Writing Stored Procedures and Functions in SQL
  • Programming: Familiarity with VBA programming environment and logic helpful
  • Data Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL): Data Movement Experience (Extract, Transform & Load) โ€“ i.e., from transactional application data to a Data Warehouse; Using Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) and/or SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Data Warehousing: Using Data Warehousing design techniques such as dimensional schemas, dimensions/facts, methods such as Kimble Toolkits; Knowledge of different loading techniques such as incremental vs full refresh, dimensional changes, snapshots, and historical archiving
  • Financial experience would be helpful
