Job Title: Lead Data Modeler
Qualification:
Bachelors in science , engineering or equivalent
Responsibility:
Data modeling
- Understand data requirements, data source systems and fields (from Designer team/ BA).
- Understand the reporting and analytical needs required for the project and seek clarification.
- Divide work among team based on many factors such as experience, domain knowledge etc.
- Define and monitor adherence to standards Cognizant, client and industry (naming convention, types of deliverables, how models are laid in the diagram etc).
- Identify best tools to use and recommend to the client as required.
- In case of standard industry models being used, identify customizations to the model based on requirements.
- In case of custom developed model, define a high level conceptual model including major entities, subject area etc and conduct requirements and analysis sessions to discuss same with the team.
- Provide technical guidance to team to develop the conceptual model further.
- Review the model developed by the team.
- Conduct walkthrough with BA/ business SME/ ETL team/ DBA administrators/ data architect to seek validation.
- Post validation, guide team to create the logical/ first level physical model and review.
- Transition the first level physical data model to the DBA for tweaking model based on DBMS (Database Management Systems) and finalize.
- Work collaboratively with the DBA, to define the indexing and partitioning based on the access requirements and determine where denormalization is required.
- Perform transition of the model to physical database independently or seek support from the team as required.
- Communicate the complexity of the design/ details of the model to all relevant stakeholders.
- Consulting Projects conduct gap analysis on client’s existing model and provide recommendations/ advice to the client (pros and cons, scalability, relevance etc).
- Data Profiling.
- Review the results of profiling conducted by the team/ Designer/ ETL team and provide feedback to better understand the data requirements and ensure fields defined are sufficient and atomic.
- Incorporate the data profiling results while designing/ reviewing data models.
- New Solution Conceptualization.
- Understand the typical sources used, information available.
- Analyze requirement and harvest information on process, model, methodology, source systems etc from other client work.
- Research on new technological advancements and analyze how the model can be adopted.
- Create industry standard data model (logical model) along with the support from team members.
- Seek validation from relevant stakeholders.
- Conduct training sessions to build awareness (as required).
- Project support.
- Create resource estimates required for the project.
- Divide workload among team members based on various factors.
- Provide ongoing status to the Project Manager/ relevant stakeholders/ Client.
- Interact with other streams and coordinate to get work done.
- Collate statistics/ information related to metrics/ SLAs from time to time for status reports/ feedback etc.
- Sales support.
- Based on the project/ RFP requirement, estimate cost and recourses required.
- Identify methodology, approach to be followed.
- Create slides on input needed, process, sample deliverables, case studies and capability required for the respective section of RFP.
- Innovation & Thought leadership.
- Provide feedback to vendors (informal network).
- Create white papers, presentations, training material, articles etc and share that knowledge by conducting various sessions (internally).
- Create industry standard models, modeling methodologies, assessment methodologies if required.
- Market Scan & Brand Building.
- Showcase capability on industry standard models available in RFPs, client presentations etc.
- People Management.
- Understand aspirations of team members.
- Set goals for team members and monitor performance.
- Guide the employee in setting career paths.
- Coordinate with the different stakeholders in understanding how the employee can better contribute to the project, seek feedback and address concerns.
- Conduct performance appraisal for team members.
- Recommend team members for promotion.
- Support organization level activities such as recruitment by conducting technical facetoface interviews.
