Position Summary

This is currently a Hybrid Position

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President of Environmental Stewardship, the Director, Sustainability Analytics will serve as one of two deputies to the Assistant Vice President of Environmental Stewardship. This position is responsible for creating and executing a strategic plan to expand and improve our process to generate University sustainability metrics and data. This position will analyze the centralized data, oversee the development of both internal and external facing sustainability data hubs and curate specialized and detailed data in visually compelling formats to convey opportunities/risks to Plan 2030 sustainability goals and science based targets, as well as support senior level decision making and amplify stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP –

Senior data-related liaison with contacts that contribute data within the University greenhouse gas inventory and carbon accounting.

Acts as the departmental liaison and content expert on science-based targets, greenhouse gas inventory data, and other sustainability and environmental performance metrics included in Plan 2030 to Columbia’s technical colleagues including the Energy Group responsible for managing work that mitigates University’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Pursues regular collaboration with all teams responsible for sources feeding Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Tracks performance for key metrics for all sustainability efforts across the university. The Director is responsible for creating the overall strategy for the collection, analysis, management, and communication of data and metrics. Initial priority area of focus for this position with be organized around Plan 2030.

Develops and executes a strategic plan to expand the university’s carbon accounting process, meet myriad reporting obligations including submission and third-party verification to The Climate Registry, participation in Ivy+ Consortium metrics reporting, AASHE STARS report and other reporting as needs evolve.

Participate in process to procure offsets/RECs and coordinate with key stakeholders to ensure the decisions aligns with university with the most environmentally beneficial options.

Monitor key regulatory initiatives (NYC, NYS, federal), internal Columbia research, and best practices related to sustainability in general and climate change in particular that may have an important impact in meeting the goals of Plan 2030.

DATA ANALYSIS AND INTEGRITY

Position Columbia on the cutting edge of sustainability analytics – from data access and collection to interpretation and application.

Source, centralize, analyze and ensure the quality and integrity of data across campus sustainability areas (i.e. energy, water, materials, food, transportation, waste, etc)

Develop and automate meaningful sustainability metrics. Create a sustainability hub to enhance transparency of data across multiple stakeholders and facilitate more effective data sharing to inspire / demonstrate commitment to SBT compliance

Build a strategic plan to enable the GHG inventory tool to report data monthly rather annually.

Ensure accuracy of data submissions to The Climate Registry, Ivy+ Sustainability Consortium, AASHE, NYC Mayor’s Challenge, and others as they arise.

Incorporate the emerging Scope 3 emissions results and build them out appropriately within the GHG inventory. Collaborate with Executive Director of Scope 3 Emissions and TDM Program to integrate key findings into stakeholder engagement program (via climate action plans) and support engagement effort to inspire behavior change throughout the Columbia campuses aimed at reducing scope 3 emissions.

Develop sustainability financial reporting templates and perform cost analyses where appropriate to support new operational decision making

Effectively integrate and prepare large, varied datasets, create specialized databases, and communicate results.

Model data to enhance data quality, impute missing values, detect anomalies, identify important relationships and or generate predications and forecast.

Generate automated reports and communications necessary for city compliance, stakeholder transparency, operational performance and decision-making.

Support the communication of analytical findings in the appropriate mediums and level of detail for Columbia leadership, department management, institutional partners, and the Columbia community and broader public. Communications may include, but are not limited to, an annual sustainability report, web-based dashboards, charts, or infographics.

Collaborate with members of the Environmental Stewardship team and the Columbia research community to build on the successful Campus as Lab efforts underway. Develop and manage a platform that provides the Columbia community with self-service access to rich sustainability campus visuals and datasets.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in computer science/engineering/business/math/policy or related field required with a minimum 8 years related work experience. Previous experience working in an urban environment and/or university setting is highly desirable.

Must possess the ability to: build relationships with many different roles at every level of the organization; offer forward thinking ideas that support the strategic vision for the office

Fluency with data and analysis using key metrics that inform key decisions to support the sustainability goals.

Experience working with energy and/or sustainability metrics.

Experience using data visualization tools (i.e. Tableau, Power, BI or similar)

Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify and remove roadblocks

Strong analytical skills and self-starter. Experience with big data management, analytics, and statistical programming languages

Must possess strong business acumen and demonstrate strategic thinking.

Ability to collaborate and work effectively with others and function well as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred. Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

Experience working in higher education a plus
