Job Location: Watertown, MA

Job Detail:

Cultivarium is a Focused Research Organization (FRO) with a mission to accelerate the adoption of novel microorganisms for biotechnology. We are looking for someone who can contribute both individually and as part of a team to create tangible solutions for a ‘moonshot’ project. You will be part of a close-knit, driven team of scientists and engineers that are building technological infrastructure for the cultivation of non-model microorganisms, to open new avenues for science, technology, medicine, and agriculture.

We are looking for a data scientist who can develop software and workflows to derive insights for manipulating non-model microbes.

How you’ll create impact:

You have first-hand experience interfacing with laboratory scientists on diverse biological data types, organizing disparate datasets, and producing analyses to drive scientific discovery and technology development. Your role will require close-knit collaboration with other scientists and engineers to translate software tools from prototypes into production. You have strong convictions about the utility of software in biology and would like to contribute directly to building broadly adoptable tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others
  • Build tools to ingest and parse data from diverse sources (e.g. from spreadsheets, APIs, scientific literature, other databases)
  • Work closely with other scientists and engineers in the group to architect and build web-based tools for experimental analyses with appropriate user interface design
  • Instantiate and manage database systems suitable for storing and sharing heterogeneous biological data types
  • Exploit data to derive actionable insights for scientists, engineers, and other decision-makers in the organization. This may include traditional machine learning and newer methods of deep learning

Basic qualifications:

  • Track record in building software for biology and/or BS in data science, computer science, physics, computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, genetics, biomedical engineering, molecular biology or related fields.
  • Fluency in Python and associated analytical packages including pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, tensorflow/pytorch, and related data analysis tools
  • Experienced in database management (SQL and optionally NoSQL)
  • High proficiency with UNIX command-line tools
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, working knowledge of general statistics and proclivity for reasoning from first principles
  • Creative thinking, problem-solving skills with an attention to detail
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines

Advanced qualifications:

  • Previous experience in industries with high volumes of quantitative data, demand for business or custom analytics, and/or clinical operations
  • Previous experience building deep learning applications for images and/or natural language processing
  • Proficient with other programming languages such as Javascript, C/C++, Go, Rust, Julia, R
  • Familiarity with web-oriented frameworks such as React/Django/Flask
  • Experience with cloud environments such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, etc
  • MS/PhD in data science, bioinformatics, or adjacent fields, or with significant industrial experience with biological data
  • Experience deploying enterprise-scale web applications

We offer

  • An opportunity to change the world and work with some of the smartest and the most talented experts from different fields
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance through a PPO plan; parental leave
  • Generous time off + paid holidays
  • Wellness allowance for fitness and wellness activities
