We are seeking a highly motivated โ€˜Data Scientist โ€“ Protein Engineeringโ€™. In this role you will combine data science and molecular structural data to discover, optimize and develop novel traits, chemistry products and biologicals. Through this role you will contribute to design, discover, and optimize proteins for different trait areas, ultimately enabling the farmer to get better yields and protect crops from biotic and abiotic stressors. As a Data Scientist, you will be part of a diverse team of Data Scientists and Analysts. A critical aspect of this position involves working in a matrix environment with global teams across multiple locations. Communication and teamwork are key elements of this role. The hiring level will be commensurate with years of experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop data-driven analytics and predictive models to enable the discovery and development of native and engineered proteins
  • Develop and embed computational methods into visualization packages to enable experimental multi-variant analysis and data-driven decision-making
  • Collaborate with wet-lab and Data scientists to cycle experimental assay data into predictive models and interpret experimental results
  • Actively seek novel AI/ML approaches, tools and technologies around protein sequence, structure, benchmark them to be used as part of internal solutions
  • Apply computational techniques to guide directed evolution of proteins, by working with experimental groups to drive experimental design and improvement of models via active learning
  • Integrate large-scale biophysical data to predict, model relevant proteins for traits discovery
  • Predict and evaluate targets for their probability of success across application areas
  • Develop and apply predictive models for protein design and engineering, utilizing large-scale NGS and other proprietary in-house and external data sources
  • Collaborate with internal and external groups to further develop protein engineering computational methods

Requirements:

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in computational biology, biophysics, protein engineering, data science or a related field
  • Protein Biology: Expertise in computational analyses of protein sequence and structure
  • Strong working experience in scientific computing using Python is required.
  • Proficiency in the development, training, and application of predictive models for biological or biochemical applications
  • Comfortable building reproducible automated workflows using version control tools such as git and workflow managers such as Airflow, Nextflow
  • Demonstrated experience in high performance computing and cloud technologies including AWS, Kubernetes.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) are a must.

Preferred Experience

  • Applicants with 2-5 years of Post-doctoral or similar industry experience will be given preference
  • Experience in the application of data science and analytics to protein engineering
  • Experience in the development and training of self-supervised learning, language or latent factor models such as variational autoencoders and transformer neural networks
  • Experience with protein language models and/or protein modeling software such as Rosetta, AlphaFold 2, ESM2, etc
