Cox Enterprises’ Integrated Business Technology Team, the Information Technology function, is currently looking for a Senior Lead Data Engineer with 10+ years of experience to join our team in Atlanta, GA.
The Senior Lead Data Engineer will be responsible for new projects, processes, standards, and the continuous improvement of data and analytics solution delivery across customer portfolios, business partners, and internal initiatives, with an initial focus on Human Capital Management. Additionally, this position will lead data analytics resources to deliver and support solutions that exceed stakeholder needs. This role will solve unique, significant, complex problems and drive creative solutions to provide consistent and standardized Business Intelligence solutions.
The Senior Lead Data Engineer will be recognized as a thought leader and subject matter expert within the Data Analytics Team within Information Technology, having authoritative technical/functional expertise and critical thinking skills to provide a complete solution to source required data from source systems and to configure the Business Intelligence platforms to support business/operational /data requirements. The individual will also define, refine, and enforce standards, guidelines, processes, and operational plans for existing and new projects with an innovative approach to address the company’s analytical data needs.
The Senior Lead Data Engineer will leverage broad business understanding to align with key business/technology stakeholders to investigate and determine business and technical requirements to resolve problems with cross-organizational impact. The role will have end-to-end oversight of the solution and will serve as a functional analyst, technical solution designer, developer, validator, and quality assurance provider. The individual will also collaborate broadly, conduct analysis of business processes, develop user scenarios, negotiate resolutions, and provide solutions to produce an enhanced functional, operational, and business outcome.
With a focus on the support of data democratization, the Senior Lead Data Engineer will work in a matrix environment providing direct leadership to the Business Intelligence Data Engineers, and technology leadership to our partners/peers in Enterprise Architecture, Software Engineering, Quality Engineering, Data Science, Business Analysis, Enterprise Applications Solutions, and Project Management, including interaction across the entire software development lifecycle using existing and emerging technologies with both technical and business focus. The successful candidate will leverage platform knowledge, perform functional analysis, drive effective solution design, and champion quality outcomes for Business Intelligence solutions. The most appropriate candidate will also demonstrate leadership, coaching/mentoring skills, direct management skills, and a customer-focused, solution-oriented mindset, combined with the flexibility of working in a dynamic, hybrid, agile environment.
The Senior Lead Data Engineer will have hands-on technical and functional experience with Oracle Databases, Data Warehousing, cloud platforms (i.e., Oracle, Azure, Amazon Web Services, Informatica), and Informatica Power Center / Data Integration and functional familiarity with Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, to support stakeholder requirements. Additionally, this person will have a background in leading large, complex engagements requiring in-depth data evaluation and critical thinking, demonstrating thought leadership, and utilizing innovative approaches to designing custom database objects and reporting solutions to support business needs. The individual will rely on application and business process knowledge as well as prior implementation experience to guide technical design decisions and manage resource allocation to accomplish business objectives on budget. This role will have a history of independent judgment and decision-making across a large span of influence.
The Senior Lead Data Engineer will directly manage a team of Data Engineers focused on Business Intelligence solutions. In addition, the successful candidate will provide guidance, coaching, and training to any stakeholders within a given business domain.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage a team of Technical Data Engineers focused on Business Intelligence solutions.
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop all Technical Data Engineer resources utilizing development plans, performance notes, or any other approved HR tools.
- Lead Technical Data Engineers on large, complex technology engagements, roadmaps and strategies requiring in-depth data evaluation and critical thinking.
- Provide expert knowledge of Business Intelligence Solutions and Data Warehousing best practices.
- Understand the “big picture” to assess impacts across the Business Intelligence platforms, Corporate IT solutions, and platforms in the Enterprise.
- Recommend technical design consistent with Cox standards and Industry standards across platforms conforming to Enterprise Standards and Accounting & Governance Policies.
- Partner with Leadership, Portfolio, Enterprise Architecture, Analytics, Security, and Data Governance teams to collaborate on platform solutions and direction and analytics and reporting opportunities.
- Champion and facilitate execution of Data and Analytics Service and Capability catalogs to address customer needs.
- Facilitates and encourages innovative solutions and recommendations through intentional collaboration, including driving novel solutions through various approaches.
- Understand Agile software methodology and tools, encouraging an iterative mindset as the team prepares for a broad transition to agile.
- Develop an understanding of Cox Enterprises applications and their interdependencies with source applications, customers, and business processes within the areas they support.
- Coordinate at a management level between Enterprise Application Solutions, Enterprise Architecture, Portfolio Leads, Data Engineering, and Data Analytics to ensure team coordination, synergy, and successful project delivery.
- Partner with Portfolio leaders and business users to understand their needs and develop innovative solution options that balance timeliness, scope, complexity, and cost.
- Work closely with BI Architects and Data/Software Engineers to estimate levels of effort for platform changes and work with the business community to set priorities.
- Help prepare requirements documents, functional and technical designs, test scenarios, and deployment plans related to the data platform.
- Perform gap analysis related to data processes and database table structures that populate reporting and analytics requirements.
- Construct, manage, monitor, and support data integration between multiple systems.
- Learn, understand, and apply the Cox enterprise architecture and ensure the proper use of applications, platforms, patterns, technology stack, technologies, etc.
- Identify architectural issues and propose alternative solutions.
- Incorporate vision as well as practicality in developing future state designs.
- Help solve day-to-day problems with the Business Intelligence platforms as users.
- Follow SDLC processes and standards.
- Develop a deep understanding of business needs and how technology solutions impact current and future business processes and controls.
- Perform work within an Agile development team and foster a team mindset with all delivery team members to work towards shared goals and objectives.
- Understand software development languages, including SQL and PL/SQL. Able to convey limitations of individual technologies and recommend solutions based on that understanding.
- Interact and build trusted relationships with all levels of personnel, including management, from both business and technology teams.
- Know how to identify and mitigate risks and escalate potential business issues.
Qualifications- Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline is a plus.
- Minimum ten years of information technology experience.
- Minimum eight years of experience in a complex Enterprise Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence/ Data Analytics development environment. Data Warehousing: Kimball methodology.
- Demonstrated technology leadership to produce results in a large, complex application environment.
- Experience leading code development, test plans, test data, and expected results at a program level.
- Experience in application design and implementation, distributed architecture and concepts, data manipulation and analysis using PL/SQL and SQL.
- Proven analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
- Proven track record of deploying large-scale Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence systems.
