Crunchyroll COVID-19 Hiring Status

About the Role:

We are looking for a Director, Data Science and Machine Learning who is passionate about problem-solving using applied statistics and machine learning to join the Center for Data and Insights. This position will report to the VP, Data and Insights. Among others, this role will be responsible for developing creative solutions to optimize content acquisition, to personalize recommendation and for implementing uplift customer lifecycle messaging models to improve retention. Working in AWS and GCS ecosystems, this role will work closely with the business partners, data scientists, data engineers and analysts to discover data patterns, build causal models, and build simulation models to help develop a data-driven strategy for content. The right person for this role will be able to build a highly functional group of data scientists and work in a fast-paced environment and have strong collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills.

About You:

• 7+ years of experience driving business impact through thorough reasoning and analysis.
• 3+ years managing data science and ML teams.
• Skilled at having an impact in complex or ambiguous problem spaces that cannot be empirically proven and require blending data and scientific methods with judgment-based approaches.
• Deep experience in applied data analysis, including A/B testing and observational causal inference methods
• Experience with and understanding of compute and orchestration tools like Databricks, Airflow, etc
• Strong scripting, programming, and SQL skills; preferably using Python, Scala, and ANSI SQL.
• Experience with streaming OLAP engines like Druid, ClickHouse, etc
• Experience with AWS services like EMR Spark, Redshift, SageMaker, Lambda, Glue, Athena, etc.
• Experience prototyping and productizing ML models in a start-up software environment
• Experience working with large data sets (billions of records).
• Proven ability to work effectively and positively with others: You have excellent interpersonal skills. You’re a good listener.
• You place the success of the company ahead of any particular idea. Proven ability to work across a matrixed organization.
• Highly articulate and an excellent communicator, with strong influencing skills and the ability to communicate well with peers and senior executives, locally and in different regions
• Ph.D. in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, statistics, social or natural science) is preferable; or other advanced degrees with additional experience

A Day in the Life of our Director, Data Science and Machine Learning:

• In this role, you will directly impact how we design, plan, and value our catalog by providing insights, metrics, data, and mathematical models to guide decision-making.
• You will develop innovative content valuation metrics and methodologies, predict demand for anime titles Funimation needs to invest for the future, identify characteristics of an “ideal” content library and derive content audience insights from data.
• Apply supervised machine learning, observational causal inference modeling to understand substitution and content demand, incremental value measurement, and member and non-member preference analyses.
• Partner with Product, Finance and Content leadership to design actionable and insightful analyses to guide future personalization and content decisions.
• Drive innovation by developing new methodologies, statistical techniques, and causal-inference approaches that could sharpen our content decision-making process
• Take ownership of stakeholder relationship and end-to-end delivery of actionable insights for decision-makers
• Write well-abstracted, reusable, and efficient code.
