Job Description

Business Technology (“BT”) is a $1B+ function that is establishing an analytics and reporting infrastructure to run BT like a business. BT partners with our four lines of business (Card, Bank, Payments, & DNA (Analytics)) to support our customers, payments partners, and employees with technology and data that fuels and accelerates our growth as a leading FinTech, digital bank, and payments partner. The data-driven reporting and insights are provided by the Analytics and Reporting Team (“A&R”) that resides within the BT-Strategy, Transformation, Operations, and Governance Team that reports directly to the Vice President: Strategy, Transformation, Operations, and Governance (who reports directly to the Chief Information Officer).

The Director, Business Technology: Analytics & Reporting (“A&R”) will report to the Vice President and provide a standard monthly operational reporting package to the BT Leadership Team, BT Leaders (Officers and Directors), Product Owners, and Lines of Business partners on the operational results of BT. The BT-A&R Team will align with the established financial monthly and quarterly cadence, working closely with the BT Chief Financial Officer and Finance Corporate Services team to understand and explain the operational results of the BT enterprise portfolio (run and change), ~850 Product Team metrics and underlying data, and BT drivers of financial results. The A&R Team will leverage multiple technology platforms and related data to deliver accurate, timely, and high-value operational reporting and analytical insights on a monthly and quarterly cadence. This is a high-performing, highly collaborative team that can communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively post consuming large amounts of data to prepare and lead discussions with each of our colleagues and partners to drive business results and accountability together. This Team will work closely with our BT Leaders to identify, investigate, and recommend continuous improvement practices while living into our Discover Behaviors: We Play to Win, We Get Better Every day, and We Succeed Together.

The Director will lead a team of six people in the development, maintenance, and support the communication of the A&R monthly reporting package. The A&R team will collaborate and work closely with the BT-Operations Team to communicate the results and discuss wins and areas of opportunity with each of our BT: Lines of business (Card, Bank, Payments) and/ or function (BT, Finance Corporate Services, Human Resources, Legal).

Together, the Operations, A&R, and Governance & Oversight Teams will support outcomes and related activities that identify, measure and monitor Objectives Key Results (OKRs), key metrics and indicators with related operational results and insights to promote our organization’s strategic framework, annual plan and outcomes, and quarterly commitments and targets. The three Teams will work collaboratively: (i) within the Business Technology Strategy, Transformation, Operations, and Governance team; (ii) within the eight Business Technology disciplines, (iii) with our BT Lines of Business partners, and (iv) with our BT partners and third parties, and across the enterprise.


Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Director for the preparation of operational data and analytics that supports operational reporting for the BT enterprise and enterprise Product Teams (~850).

  • Partner closely with Operations Team, Governance & Oversight Team, BT Leaders, and stakeholders across our company to provide data and analytics within our operational infrastructure

    • Provide key thought leadership, strategic direction, and hands-on management to achieve (a) visibility and transparency into the data and (b) provide actionable data-driven insights for BT and Business to make informed, data-driven decisions (in a proactive and timely manner) that drive both business and technology outcomes.

    • Prepare analytics and reporting from organizational data that will provide data-driven insights into enterprise-level BT operational efforts for BT Leaders decisions and outcomes, related to (including but not limited to): operational efforts related to financial results and operations of Product Teams (representing ~6,000 resources (internal and external))

      • Data will guide the Governance and Oversight Team to establish goal-setting, oversight and tracking of technology transformation initiatives and strategic projects towards their expected business value and outcomes

      • Data will guide the Operations Team to identify and recommend processes, protocols, procedures, and “Rules of the Road” that drive efficiencies and improve shareholder value

      • Data will guide the Strategy Team to evolve our Five-Year Plan and related simplification and modernization efforts. The A&R Team will support stakeholders in developing the business case for strategic technology investments in the Simplification and Modernization Plan to support go/no-go business decisions

  • Create a culture of effective risk management, accountability, and demonstration of risk awareness across our organization based on operational results.

  • Lead, develop, build, and manage team capabilities of appropriately sized teams (including, direct and cross-matrix). The Director and Analytics and Reporting Team members will “roll up their sleeves” to:

    • Present the insights and results of data analyses to management (BT Leadership Team, BT Leaders) and Lines of Business leaders.

      • Partner with BT and the lines of business to identify the appropriate data sources and analysis methodology

      • Be responsible for gathering, structuring, and analyzing data and providing recommendations to Governance & Oversight, Operations with BT Leaders

      • Support the development of standard data analyses, reports, and dashboards

      • Manage data from internal and external sources necessary to support reporting and analytic activities. Work closely with technology and business partners to identify any new data / reporting requirements

      • Demonstrate knowledge of analytical tools – existing and those available in the market

      • Promote the continuous enhancement of reporting and analytic products and processes

      • To support the preparation of data-driven insights, collaboratively work with key business partners to understand:

        Understand product alignment and consistency

        Product and delivery teams

        Agile delivery models

        Priorities of the enterprise value streams

        Discover organizational objectives

      • Produce / help to coordinate key metrics as needed

    • Drive and assist in communication on strategic initiatives to help drive consensus, achieve clarity, and solve business problems

    • Provide oversight & process guidance for activities of the A&R Team

    • Communicate status to the Vice President

  • Maintain a sound knowledge and understanding of current methodologies, technologies, services, and tools within Discover and the FinTech industry to stay on top of industry trends and emerging technologies in anticipation of business growth and organizational efficiency

  • Knowledge share lessons learned from root cause themes and regulatory feedback.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Information Technology

  • 8+ years of experience in program/initiative management

  • In lieu of a degree, 15+ years of experience in program/initiative management

  • 2+ years of people management experience

  • Ability to consume large amounts of information and synthesize it into a meaningful story with impactful “so-whats” and recommendations with options on path forward

  • Strong JIRA, Tableau, Microsoft PowerPoint and excel skills, demonstrating advanced knowledge of analytical tools

  • Strong communication and executive presence experience

  • Experience leading complex, challenging, and successful global program implementations in Technology and consolidating multiple projects’ plans to run a large program in a growing business environment.

  • Working in close, collaborative partnerships with the other BT STG colleagues, BT Leadership Team and their respective teams, BT Chief Financial Officer and related workforce management team, Procurement, Product Teams (leaders from BT, Line of Business, Enterprise, and their Product Owners), and enterprise Risk Management

  • Ensuring all work will be delivered in the time frame committed, ensuring interdependencies are flagged and managed, risks are identified or escalated, blockers are identified, addressed and proposed solutions are discussed collaboratively with the team, and the outcome is in high quality

  • Driving performance by identifying interdependencies, overlaps, and gaps across operational results, holding colleagues and third-party partners accountable, ensuring blockers are identified and appropriately escalated, and work is aligned to meet overall objectives.

  • Communicating clearly, concisely with executive presence to the Executive Committee, Management Committee, and Officers and Directors of Discover

  • Maintaining a collaborative, executive demeanor with critical listening and influencer skill sets, with a sense of urgency, alignment to strategy and annual goals (Objectives and Key Results), and 90-120-day forward-looking outlook to move Efforts forward (while being mindful of interdependencies).

  • Developing/ evolving an operational toolkit with “Rules of the Road” playbook that will become the standard for operational reviews

  • Working alongside existing teams to raise awareness and train them on the operational toolkit and playbook

  • Maintaining an organizational, operational structure to house the monthly artefacts for reference by those engaged

  • Establishing, leading, and maintaining the operational structure and cadence

    • Prepare an operational A&R package with dashboard(s) and supporting files summarizing the detailed analyses to support the metrics

    • Work with BT-Strategy, Transformation, Governance & Oversight Team to provide A&R analyses for:

      • Governance & Oversight updates, risks, issues, and interdependencies related to enterprise portfolio management, goals, and Objectives Key Results

      • Operations Team related to data results for the Operational Reporting package

  • Being a Financial Steward working closely with Finance Corporate Services CFO and team:

    • Prepare analysis of actuals vs budget(s), aggregating related interdependent financial budgets with operational results and updates

    • Track trending on operational impacts to actual cost compared to budget, presenting variances

    • Identify levers and opportunities to be a proactive financial steward of Discover resources

  • Support the development of business cases (quantitative and qualitative) for business initiatives, process improvement initiatives, or BT transformation recommendations

  • Bringing forth business, strategic, financial and technology acumen (to understand Discover’s business strategy, learn processes, and identify enhancement opportunities)

  • Professional industry experiences in credit card, reporting, analytics, consumer lending or other financial service industries, consumer products, or related
