Job Location: Saint Louis, MO

Job Detail:

The Phenotyping and Data Science teams at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center are seeking an individual to fill a full-time position as a Data Scientist I (anticipated state date, March 2023). The Data Scientist I will work at the intersection of plant phenotyping, computational sciences, and geospatial sciences. The Data Scientist I will work with members of the Data Science, and Phenotyping teams, as well as the Taylor Geospatial Institute, to collect and analyze field phenotyping data, including satellite and uncrewed aircraft images. This work includes programming (Python in particular), version control, statistical analysis (R preferred), data visualization, data management, image analysis, geospatial analysis, and other relevant skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with members of the Data Science and Phenotyping teams
  • Coordinating with data collection teams at field sites
  • Developing workflows and pipelines for plant phenotyping/geospatial data analysis
  • Presenting results to team members, field researchers, and other collaborators
  • Other duties as assigned

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Highly organized individual who can maintain progress in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to multitask and manage time effectively
  • Must be comfortable collaborating and working across teams
  • Good communication skills
  • Familiarity with basic computer programs such as Google Drive/Microsoft Office365 and communication tools such as Slack

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with several of the following: navigating the Linux/Unix command line, programming language proficiency, bioinformatics, statistics, image analysis, geospatial analysis, machine learning, algorithm development, data structures, workflow development, and high-performance/high-throughput computing
  • Experience with data collection and/or image analysis is preferred

Education:

  • Bachelors degree with 5+ years of experience, or a Masters degree or PhD with an equivalent combination of experience in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, geospatial sciences, or relevant fields
