About the Team and Role:
eBay’s “Global Authentication Decision Science” team is seeking an experienced Data Scientist. This role will focus on inspiring change and improving data driven decision making- through statistical model development, intense data analyses, rigorous truth seeking and practical insight’s discovery. This team plays a strategic role supporting the core authentication operations and go-to market teams for authenticity-guarantee and vault supply chain.
The successful candidate will find him/herself surrounded by sharp professionals with diverse backgrounds, operating in a fast-paced, intellectual, and team-oriented environment. This highly impactful role offers the unique opportunity to develop/showcase hybrid skill sets and partner with leaders across the organization. More specifically, the role will partner with authentication/vault strategic operations, facilities teams, shipping and other cross-functional teams to measure operational and shipping efficiencies/initiatives, perform financial cost/benefits analysis, develop/improve forecasting models and develop state of the art causal learning, and predictive techniques.
Here are some interesting problem statements we are working on.
- Where should our future authentication center be located? What is the most optimal transit route? How can we optimize shipping costs?
- Identify key reasons for customer returns and apply learnings to improve QC processes. > Develop scalable solutions for analyses and models focused on Natural Language and free text inputs like buyer and seller reviews, product listing, survey results etc.
- How do we make sure our authentication centers are correctly staffed to enable the fastest possible customer promise especially during peak holiday season / promotions etc.? > Workforce Planning & Staff Capacity Forecasting
- How can we enable our partners and centers to know way ahead with volume of shipments arriving and departing? > Forecasting
The role, based in San Jose U.S., reports into Senior Manager, Authentication Decision Science
To be successful in this role you have:
- Exceptional business judgment and quantitative abilities.
- Demonstrated experience in forecasting and time series modeling such as ARIMA.
- Experience in NLP and text processing like text classification, named entity extraction (NER) etc.
- Strong communication skills and experience distilling and presenting complex analyses into action-oriented recommendations.
- Ability to thrive in a cross-functional environment while juggling multiple responsibilities.
- Expertise in building machine learning models and ability to communicate, drive adoption of these models to solve customer/business problems.
- Good experience with both descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Expertise in SQL, and proficiency in either Python or R and a good understanding of data warehouse architecture is required.
- Expertise in designing and measuring A/B tests.
- Domain expertise in shipping, supply chain or a related field is a plus.
