Scope: The Director Engineering Algorithms and AI will provide direct leadership within the department to manage projects developing artificial intelligence/machine learning based algorithms for data fusion, autonomy, and navigation and additional future applications. Candidate will be expected to be able to identify technology needs and plan projects to create it, defining scope and developing budget and schedule to accomplish objectives. Candidate must be able to lead teams to develop winning proposals, able to understand customer needs and provide technical subject matter expertise to connect our capabilities to a winning strategy. The Director Engineering will work with peers across ESA Engineering to facilitate transition of advanced capability to product teams and into products. The Director will help create and/or improve engineering processes to improve this transition.
The Advanced Capabilities Engineering team spans across multiple ESA locations and the Director will manage this geographically diverse organization. Director will have responsibility for staffing, hiring, skill development and performance management of system engineering team, working with peers across ESA engineering to successfully execute programs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required (Unique and Measurable):
- Experience in developing advanced products for the aerospace and defense market, especially bringing advanced technologies into products
- Demonstrated leadership skills, 10+ years personnel management
- Experience with simulation and digital system model development and analysis is desired.
- Experience in Team leadership, IMS development, business capture, agile processes, strategic planning, roadmap development.
Responsibilities & Tasks:
- Director is responsible for assessing current and upcoming program and R&D needs for engineering and acting to staff activities with qualified resources, including internal or external resources as appropriate. Director has responsibility for workforce development, training and management to meet program and business needs. This should include training and development of existing workforce, hiring of additional resources, working with peers across the organization to leverage other resources within ESA, and working with appropriate 3rd party organizations when necessary to augment ESA staff.
- Partner with technical directors across all business units (or technology areas) to understand business demand and upcoming opportunities, facilitate the development of engineering estimates (BOEs), and manage the organization to successfully staff programs and efforts.
- Directly manage, develop, and grow a team of 20+ engineers
- Grow the continuous improvement culture, enabling ways to implement more efficient solutions, such as reuse across programs/businesses.
- Ability to deal with complex problems in an international environment of cultural diversity.
- Technology development from concept through verification and delivery to the customer including integration onto the specific platform.
- Technical leadership during the pursuit/proposal/design/implementation phase.
- Technical briefings to management and customers.
- Development of technical & product roadmaps and competitive assessments.
- Develop and/or select analyze highly complex algorithms to meet customer needs.
- Support business capture activities, including proposal text development, cost estimating and presentation activities.
- Work independently and with internal/external organizations
- Willingness to travel Domestically and Internationally.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master’s Degree is highly desired
Specific Degree Field: Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related Technology degrees will not be applicable.
Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a favorably adjudicated DOD Clearance at the Secret level
