Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has an opening for a Scientific Data Engineer to join their Data Science and Informatics Group!
JGI supports thousands of scientists each year by turning plant, fungal, or microbiome samples into data that supports exciting discoveries. In this exciting role, you will integrate and scale-up applications that serve the needs of JGI’s Scientific User community.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate with data analysts, high performance computing experts, project managers, data management experts and others to accomplish their goals. Reporting to the Systems Engineering Group Lead, you will work with the JGI Automated Workflow System (JAWS) Team and other JGI staff to use containers, the workflow description language (WDL) and well architected software to productionize and fortify new pipelines.
What You Will Do:
- Partner with the Systems Engineering Lead, Senior Management, and Development teams to provide support for the execution of Systems Engineering initiatives.
- With a significant level of independence, meet the support and development needs of internal JGI stakeholders.
- Continually improve skills development by executing hands-on engineering, and/or development, leadership, consulting, education, presentation activities, or training.
- Propose solutions to complex system-wide problems.
- Develop and implement methods and techniques within the Systems Engineering Group and with other groups.
- Follow prescribed best practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering.
- Ensure resources, tools, and documentation are available to on-board developers quickly and enable them to contribute to software development.
- Provide technical guidance to team members.
In addition to the above the Scientific Data Engineer 4 will also:
- Lead technical initiatives within the Systems Engineering Group, Data Science and Informatics Department, and across JGI, for example, increased adoption of software engineering best practices.
- Coordinate resources, activities, and communication across JGI groups to propose and implement solutions to complex system-wide problems.
- Manage project scoping, planning, and deliverables for engineering teams.
- Engage with the broader organization in the user-centered design processes to prioritize development activities.
- Present to key stakeholders at meetings and reviews.
What is Required:
- A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science or a related scientific field and a minimum of 8 years of demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and scaling systems and software in a scientific or technical environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with full life-cycle software development including the ability to work with scientific and non-scientific users to define needs, priorities, manage expectations, define project scope and timelines.
- Fluency in agile development methods.
- Experience documenting processes and software, and sharing that information with team members.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, test-driven development, pair programming, Python, MySQL, Oracle, Postgres, WDL/Cromwell, Java, HTML/CSS, javascript, BASH, AWS, SLURM, docker/shifter, Linux OS, and NoSQL.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience synthesizing information to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the experience collaborating with a diverse staff of scientific and technical specialists within an interdisciplinary team environment.
Additional Qualifications for the Scientific Data Engineer 4
- A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science or a related scientific field and a minimum of 12 years of demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and scaling systems and software in a scientific or technical environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience leading full life-cycle software development including experience working with scientific and non-scientific users to define needs, priorities, manage expectations, define project scope and timelines.
- Experience with user-driven design.
- Demonstrated presentation skills including the ability to provide clear and concise information to senior management, Lab, and DOE Leadership.
- Experience hiring, training, coaching, and leading employees.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science or a related scientific field.
- Experience working with lab information management systems (LIMS).
- Experience working with bioinformatics tools and/or analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of Molecular Biology and sequence analysis tools and methods.

- This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
- This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
- If hired at a level 3: This position has a targeted salary range of $123,684 to $154,608 per year for job code C76.3. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
- If hired at a level 4: This position has a targeted salary range of $140,856 to $176,064 per year for job code C76.4. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
