Title: Data Analyst – Wastewater
$65,000 – $75,000 / Posted Thru: 2-6-23

Location: Remote/Virtual – Must Live In Michigan
Occasional In-Person Meetings Required – Lansing, MI Office

Purpose: The Wastewater Data Analyst will work on interagency wastewater surveillance projects for COVID-19, along with future wastewater projects related to other diseases or targets of public health interest. This person serves as a recognized resource conducting data management and analysis and developing data reports for wastewater data.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assemble new or use existing databases and other information for analysis of wastewater data and other related datasets. Currently this is focused on COVID-19 but will expand to other conditions in the future.
  • Conduct analyses of wastewater data and other related datasets using statistical software.
  • Create datasets in response to data use agreements and for potential publications.
  • Develop statewide and local data summaries for a variety of purposes and stakeholders.
  • Research and write both complex and simplified (public-oriented) narrative and statistical reports.
  • Provide public health consultation to local health departments and other stakeholders.
  • Liaise and collaborate with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB), and other participating agencies and partners.
  • Assist with development of and participate in relevant conference calls, trainings, webinars, etc.
  • Assist with development of and provide input into databases, public-facing websites, or dashboards related to Section activities.
  • Collaborate with and participate in national initiatives related to wastewater surveillance.
  • Provide expertise and support to the EZID Section and the Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional, and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant of MPHI projects and always represent to the best interest of MPHI and MDHHS.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a master’s degree or higher in public health- or informatics-related field such as epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, or laboratory sciences.

Experience: Two years or more of professional experience in an equivalent position of this type or positions with experience in data analysis or epidemiology is desired but not required. Highly desirable: Experience with data analysis and visualization, wastewater or environmental projects, and team-oriented projects.

Important Skills and Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures for the collection or organization, interpretation, and presentation of data.
  • Excellent data analysis skills, oral and written communication skills, and be able to work well in team situations.
  • Self-motivated, ability to complete work independently and in a timely manner.
  • Possess a positive attitude and professional demeanor.
  • Experience with statistical software (preferably R).
  • Experience with Tableau, GIS, SQL and/or informatics software are a plus.
  • Knowledge of public wastewater systems, environmental engineering, and/or PCR-based or genetic sequencing laboratory testing methods are a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs including email, Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, and internet browser software.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The position is currently mainly remote, with the occasional in-person meetings in the Lansing area. The employee must be a resident of Michigan per State of Michigan Employee guidelines. Must have reliable home internet connection for teleworking. Job may require light physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50# and involves viewing a computer screen up to 100% of the time.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: The person in this position interacts with associated inter- and intra-agency project staff, local health departments, laboratorians, and other stakeholders through a variety of means to support the application of wastewater surveillance to the understanding of disease transmission and impacts of public health interventions. This position is responsible for wastewater data analysis, integration of wastewater data with other data sets, and efforts to communicate and publish such analyses. Employee will have a direct impact upon epidemiology, data analysis, and responses to the emerging field of public health wastewater surveillance for COVID-19 and other diseases.
