Department Overview:
If you ever wanted to work with a team that is on the front line of climate science using best-in-class fire weather data, this is your opportunity. PG&E’s Meteorology Operations and Analytics team is one of the most impactful at the company, providing support across all aspects of PG&E’s utility operations through advanced modeling and monitoring capabilities. Our modeling program includes weather forecasting, utility fire risk forecasting, outage and storm forecasting, solar forecasting, electric and gas load forecasting, and hydro forecasting. The team has deployed a utility-mesonet with more than 1200 weather stations, deployed over 200 high-resolution “Alert Wildfire” cameras and developed a fire detection and alert system using geosynchronous and polar-orbiting satellites. The team constructed an hourly 30-year high-resolution down-scaled climatology of weather and fuel models, operates a high-resolution weather-fuels coupled forecast model, and leverages fire spread and consequence simulations of >70 million fires igniting near overhead utility infrastructure daily.

Position Summary:
We are looking for a back-end developer to develop and maintain back-end application using rich meteorological and fire datasets. This position will have flexibility to imagine new ways of analyzing fire danger and weather data while also enhancing the fire weather models that are already in place. The team currently utilizes and develops nearly completely in AWS. Client applications are built leveraging several internal and external meteorological datasets, remotely-sensed fire detection data, and utility-specific data. You will have a unique opportunity to contribute in one or more of the areas above at the forefront of utility, meteorology, and fire science and have an extremely high impact in utility operations.

While a majority of your work will be the team of meteorologists and data scientists, this role will also work with cloud engineers, and GIS analysts to develop and enhance operational applications and tools. You will have the opportunity to solve impactful problems facing the utility and the state of California and work on complex technical issues every day.

Responsibilities:
Develop, deploy, and maintain back-end client applications that enhance our ability to understand fire weather and datasets

Analyze existing applications and systems, identifies and implements application improvements, and tests/debugs applications.

Utilize the latest cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Cloud Infrastructure) to take client applications and utility operations to the next level.

Devise and plan projects with an operation-forward mindset. This includes designing and building applications with fault tolerance, disaster-recovery capability, logging, monitoring, and automated alerting to ensure high availability and resiliency.

Ensure responsiveness of client applications and optimize applications for speed and scalability.

Design, maintain and develop APIs.

Assists in the development and management of meteorological databases and operational data systems.

Appropriately document data sources, methodology, and code

Work closely with the operational forecast team to scope and deliver required application functionality

Remaining current in developments in web applications and programming languages.

Qualifications:Minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, or similar.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in back-end development, OR Master’s Degree and 3 years relevant experience

Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated collaboration or paired development work history with effective communication skills.

Demonstrated experience with application development for forecasting, or other applications utilized for operations

Experience with modern software delivery practices, including source control, testing, continuous delivery, continuous integration

Track record of writing clear and well documented code

Back end proficiency with PostgresSQL or SQL and proven experience working with relational databases.

Strong understanding of statistics and experience developing supervised & unsupervised machine learning models.

Development experience on Linux, SQL servers, and AWS (s3, EC2). General knowledge of meteorological data is a plus but not a need.
