JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (OPAIR) at Penn State is looking for a highly motivated and skilled Metadata Developer who is eager to work alongside end-users as part of the Data Management team (Metadata Developers and Data Engineers) to build an infrastructure that transforms Penn State data into insights for Penn State decision-makers.

The metadata team is responsible for interpreting, documenting, and validating the data reporting and analysis requirements of the University Community. The team identifies which data attributes will support those requirements, decides how the data should be structured, and works on the implementation.

The successful candidate must demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information, attention to detail, a commitment to diversity, and accuracy and professionalism.

Education and experience:

This position will be filled as a programmer/analyst level 3 and typically requires a bachelor’s degree or higher plus four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Technical Experience:

  • Experience with data architecture principles, practices, tools, and concepts such as data quality, master data management, data lineage, metadata management, and data governance

  • Data modeling background – understanding of star schema and developing multidimensional data models

  • Experience with developing data models for enterprise reporting applications, such as Power BI, OBIEE, or similar

  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications

  • PL/SQL, T-SQL, Power Query, M

  • Knowledge of how business processes and systems affect data quality

  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence, data storytelling, and visualization concepts

  • Hands-on experience coding and designing new reports, maintaining and enhancing existing reports, and designing dashboards on scalable business intelligence platforms

  • Hands-on experience testing and validating data used in reports or other analyses

  • Ability to work independently

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with others at all levels of technical proficiency

Preferred Technical Experience:

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services (Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL)

  • Expertise with Oracle Business Intelligence tools (OAS, OAC, OBIEE)

  • Expertise with Power BI

  • Python, R, or other programming languages

  • Experience with using or creating automated test scripts

The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, fully in-person at our University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Standard working hours are in the eastern time zone.
