Job Location: Englewood, CO
The Director, Data Engineering will drive the technical roadmap, development, and support of Red Robin’s data platform to support the data needs of stakeholders across the business. We are looking for an experienced, business savvy, articulate and creative problem solver to lead a team of exceptional data engineers and data analysts. They must be a motivating leader that is able to select, focus, and execute on high-impact, complex data projects. The candidate must have extensive experience delivering complex cross-departmental analytics projects on time, monitoring the accuracy of the data, and driving adoption and measuring impact to business. This role will span the entire lifecycle of data analytics, from data engineering to business insights and reporting. Must be a thought leader around all things data with a focus on data democratization.
Essential Functions
- Manage direct reports as a player coach and facilitate a culture of growth and development
- Create an environment that makes data and information easily accessible, driving insights while maintaining appropriate access controls (data democratization)
- Takes the lead in defining goals for data management and governance with Red Robin’s broader organizational vision
- Provide expertise and consult on all new major data-related, data-dependent, and data intensive initiatives enabling business and strategy teams to transform those initiatives into action
- Partner with the business, product, and engineering teams to unlock the power of leveraging data at Red Robin
- Adopt and implement industry leading technologies to facilitate continuous improvements on data management related efforts.
- Oversee technical strategy and architecture across data integration, data lake, data warehousing and data access layers.
- Lead metadata management implementation efforts that enable how data will be used for business reporting and analytics.
- Establish and evangelize best practices, frameworks, and processes across data engineering
- Develop strong relationships with Analytics leaders across the business (BI, Consumer Insights) to improve how data is leveraged
- Drive technical innovation by exploring new platforms and technologies, uncovering new use cases with data and staying current with the data landscape
- Deep understanding of the modern ETL pipeline across our technology infrastructure
- Develop strategies and approaches to support our BI Team with the goal of analyzing large data sources to develop predictive models, drillable dashboards, and conduct ad-hoc analyses
- Partner with internal stakeholders to improve business performance using insights generated by the team.
- Balance stakeholders needs understanding the expectations and needs of each department, taking a proactive approach executing data roadmap and priorities
- Proactively provide recommendations on new data sources and metrics for future analysis
- Partner with business teams and advocate for data-driven decision and frameworks via empowerment of data usage across the business
- Self-motivated and driven to accomplish company goals and who is comfortable multitasking in a fast paced, matrixed environment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong leadership and exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) on quantitative topics for a variety of audiences
- Expertise or at least strong familiarity leading bid data solutions
- Expertise in data retrieval, data modeling, data warehouse design and predictive modeling
- Expertise in Azure, PowerBI, DaraBricks, Data Lakes and Data Factory
- Expertise in data mining, complex data structures, data visualizations and end-to-end data capabilities
- Fluent in data fundamentals: SQL, data manipulation using a procedural language, statistics, experimentation, and modeling.
- Experience with software development: object-oriented languages, version control, automated testing, and deployment environments.
- Background in statistics preferred and the business application of probability distributions.
- Ability to solve complex problems with simple and elegant solutions
- Learns quickly when facing new problems; a relentless and versatile learner; open to change; analyzes both successes and failures for clues to improvement; experiments and will try anything to find solutions; enjoys the challenge of unfamiliar tasks.

- Good interpersonal skills and experience working with other engineering teams
- Good understanding of cluster and parallel architecture as well as high-scale or distributed RDBMS and/or knowledge on NoSQL platforms (e.g. PostgreSQL, Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake, DynamoDB)

Compensation Range: $120,800.00 – $166,100.00
