Serco’s Training and Experience Program (STEP) is designed to provide undergraduate university and college students paid accredited internship opportunities to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience in a professional environment. Our goal is to help you build a career roadmap that provides you with challenging and rewarding learning experiences with Serco.
Serco offers internship opportunities across the following three career tracks: Business, Technical, and Engineering. Our 2023 internship opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada, beginning on May 22 nd and concluding on August 11 th , with 1 week off July 3 rd -7 th . You will work with your manager to identify the best working schedule for you, working no more than an average of 36 hours a week with the added perk of half-days on Fridays.
In addition to gaining hands-on experience, you will attend training sessions taught by skilled leaders in our company to better prepare you for a full-time career. Furthermore, we believe great ideas come from all levels of the company! Each year we challenge our interns to work in diverse teams to develop, propose and execute on a project that improves our ways of working. Throughout this project you will work with Senior Sponsors and meet with members of our Executive Team.

This Machine Learning Intern will join a dynamic team of research scientists and software engineers that develop innovative machine learning technologies to address some of the U.S. military’s most challenging problems. Serco offers an exciting internship opportunity in the Machine Learning Group (MLG) of the Enterprise Technology Office (ETO). MLG is responsible for developing innovative machine learning technologies that both solve our customer’s challenges and contribute to the growth of the company. The Machine Learning Intern will work either at of our Arlington, VA headquarters, fully remote, or a hybrid of those options. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is innovative and driven by challenging technical problems.
Serco’s Machine Learning Group develops a wide range of capabilities addressing our customer’s challenges which include data integration and fusion, developing machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies that can either augment or replace human tasks, and leveraging complex data sources to optimize workflows.
Over the course of the summer, you will be part of a small (3-7 member team) that works closely with our customers and other teams to deliver innovative systems to the U.S. military. We are seeking computer science, engineering or other science majors to contribute to our research & development efforts, particularly in the areas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. You will report to Michael Colony, who has over 30 years of experience and leads many of the Machine Learning Group’s efforts.
In this role, you will:
- Be assigned a project that is significant to our ongoing contracts with the U.S. military, appropriately scoped for a summer intern. The project may be a group project with other interns.
- Work with members of the MLG team to frame the problem, design the solution, develop the code to implement it, and test and evaluate its effectiveness. Software will likely be written in Java and/or Python
- Package and deliver software for the target environment using standard DevOps principles
- Collaborate with co-workers, leadership, and clients to understand client problems, identify solutions, and demonstrate software solutions
- Participate in internal and client-defined agile software development processes
- Write technical software documentation and explain software design and implementation to co-workers, clients, and partners.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- To be currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline from an accredited university
- Working knowledge of Java and/or Python
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong team player who can effectively contribute to project development
- Ideal candidates are rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, or Spring 2023 graduates.
- This position is contingent upon your ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
This role is also best suited for the following additional skills:
- Experience with, or coursework in, Machine Learning
