Job Description
The mission of the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science (CBHDS) is to achieve excellence in Virginia Tech’s health- and medically-related research portfolio through fostering collaborations across biostatistics, data science, health analytics, computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, biology, database management and integration, project coordination, clinical practice, health economics, translation and public policy.
– Identify, integrate and coordinate expertise and resources pertinent to the areas of biostatistics, statistics, health analytics, data science, epidemiology, data management, informatics, health economics, etc to provide a central support hub for health- and medically- related research;
– Promote the use and awareness of appropriate contemporary analytic methods in health- and medically-related research projects;
- Provide training and mentorship to statisticians, analysts, and data scientists relative to communication and collaboration with biomedical and health researchers;
- Through effective interdisciplinary collaboration, gain an understanding of disease etiologies, adopt effective treatment and prevention strategies, and positively impact mental and physical health and quality of life.

Our work is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, so the selected candidate will have opportunities to engage with Virginia Tech researchers across various organizations. In Roanoke, many of our collaborators specialize in addiction, mental health, and neuroscience, and thus the ideal candidate would have experience and interest in this area of health science research.
Under the mentorship of a senior statistician, the selected candidate will perform programming tasks, including data cleaning, data management, and linkage; engage in sophisticated data wrangling, including claims and electronic health records (EHR) data; conduct appropriate statistical analyses using statistical languages (SAS, R), including summarizing and disseminating analytic findings. He/she/they will also build databases and surveys in REDCap to support collaborative projects.
In summary, under the supervision of a senior statistician, key responsibilities for the Data Analyst/Scientist include:
- Collaborating with investigators to design clinical studies in the health sciences
- Writing statistical methods for grant proposals, manuscripts, and summary reports
- Generating statistical analyses to support doctoral student and faculty research
- Engaging in sophisticated data wrangling, including claims data and electronic health records
- Conducting appropriate statistical analyses using statistical languages (SAS, R), including
summarizing and disseminating analytic findings
- Conducting research and applying novel analytic and statistical methods as appropriate
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent training and experience ; Experience in data analytics in a higher education setting, with specific knowledge of data management tools and processes, including preparing data dictionaries and codebooks; Experience building advanced REDCap data management tools for prospective data collection; Knowledge of basic statistical methods; Basic programming skills in R; Experience generating statistical analyses and interpreting output, including generating descriptive statistics, data visualizations, and survival analyses; Experience with website management using Ensemble; Experience building Canvas sites for course content; Evidence of strong work habits, and ability to work collaboratively on a team as well as independently; Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment; Excellent critical thinking, organizational, communication, and collaborative research skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with and analyzing data from electronic health records; Experience and skills working with large, publicly available datasets; Experience generating data analyses, drafting methods and results sections for manuscripts with clinical investigators; Experience estimating bivariate and multivariable survival models in R; Experience generating descriptive “Table 1”s for peer-reviewed manuscript submission.
