VMware Carbon Black is leveraging the power of big data analytics to provide our customers with the tools and visibility to stop attacks before they start. The product portfolio includes the rapidly growing Carbon Black Cloud platform that delivers next-generation endpoint protection capabilities from the cloud. To deliver on this mission our Production Engineering team needs someone who can drive API-based performance test planning and development and look for ways to work smarter, not harder. The Carbon Black Cloud is backed by the power of AWS to ingest and manage the terabytes of security data. We need to make sure our microservice can perform under load and deliver the security telemetry our customers need. Our Performance team’s goal is to develop automation and performance tools which prove we are meeting SLAs and enable faster bottleneck detection and resolution; all in the name of protecting customers at scale.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

• Within 60 days of joining, you will become familiar with the role of Production Engineering and be assigned to a project with a mentor to help with ramping up on tools and procedures
• Within 120 days you will be developing performance tests and building dashboards to reflect current service state
• Within 180 days you will be proficient with the performance framework and be able to quickly develop tests for multiple projects to validate requirements
• Within 360 days of joining along with the above you will be comfortable attending planning sessions with developers and architects to validate designs and plan upcoming tests, developing tests and enabling development teams to execute tests in a self-service model

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Review and implement solutions to evaluate performance and scalability of new product offerings
• Root cause performance and scalability issues and contribute to product code to alleviate these issues
• Develop performance and scale test plans based on deep understanding of domain, architecture and product tech stack
• Design, implement and maintain test frameworks
• Support extended teams in troubleshooting problems, such as system malfunctions
• Provide feedback, propose solutions and suggest improvements in the product
• Partner with Senior Performance Engineers and developers to develop best practices

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Ken Doherty. Starting as an automation engineer followed by an Engineering Manager role, Ken was part of Carbon Black for 3 years prior to the VMware acquisition. As part of VMware, he is a Director of Engineering on the Production Engineering team where he coordinates automation framework development, customer scenario, enablement and performance testing across multi-region teams. He encourages everyone to learn from each other, teach others and grow themselves while being collaborative and courteous. Production Engineering works across various parts of the globe and follows a dynamic, open, transparent culture.

Where is this role located?

This team has been historically based out of VMware’s Palo Alto office however this role is open to fully remote and can be done anywhere in North America. If you live in the surrounding area you will have the option to work from the office partly or fully if you wish to do so.
