Job Location: Schaumburg, IL

Zurich North America is looking for an experienced VP, Lead Data Scientist to join our Data & Analytics team based out of our North American Headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. While this position will be based out of our Schaumburg Headquarters, we are offering the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely. You will collaborate with your manager to set a schedule that supports you, your customers, and the team.

As a thought leader within the team, the mission of the VP, Lead Data Scientist is to put the science into the decision-making process. Priorities can change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Being the trusted expert charged with evolving our data science roadmap for all software and engineering analytics
  • Develop novel research to qualitatively deduce and draw conclusions from data to directly influence feature design, business models, UX and process heuristics
  • Be able to formulate problems well, prototype solutions, make reasonable assumptions in the face of ill-structured problems, design solutions and analyze results
  • Design and implement predictive models and simulations to optimize business decisions
  • Build and design Machine Learning systems and AI products to optimize underwriting and claims use cases
  • Create an experimentation platform and methodology to allow for the agile, but safe, testing of all software features
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data scientists with a wide range of backgrounds
  • Democratize and socialize learning by acting as editor of a centralized learning repository
  • Understand stakeholder needs and educate partners on the formulation of research questions and methodologies
  • Evangelize our data science practice outside the company to increase visibility, attract data portal customers, and recruit new talent
  • Increase technical proficiency and data science literacy across ZNA

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 10 or more years of experience in the Statistical and/or Predictive Analytics area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Computer Science, or related quantitative areas
  • Extensive hands-on experience in building and executing complex analytical and statistical projects and analyses using advanced statistical modeling techniques in a business setting
  • Comfort manipulating and analyzing sophisticated, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources, including both structured and unstructured data
  • The ability to demonstrate proficient knowledge of machine and deep learning methods like k-Nearest Neighbors, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, Regularization Regressions
  • Experience developing AI algorithms and products with Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Image/Voice Recognition, Unsupervised Process and Pattern Mining using popular AI/ML frameworks
  • A strong design thinking in user experience and interface
  • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data
  • A flexible analytic approach that allows for results at varying levels of precision
  • Ability to communicate sophisticated quantitative analysis in a clear, detailed, and meaningful manner using data visualization techniques
  • Experience in insurance-specific predictive analytics
  • Track record of developing distinctive business impact through analytics
  • Proficiency with Python and SQL
  • Experience working with large data sets, experience working with distributed computing tools (Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, etc.) and Machine Learning pipelines (Spark, DASK, Argo, etc.)
  • Cultivates open, inclusive culture that supports learning and encourages collaboration.
